Demolition work begins on Leicester’s tallest residential building
DSM Demolition Group begin dismantlement of 22-storey Goscote House
BIRMINGHAM-based DSM, one of the UK’s leading demolition contractors, have commenced work on the demolition of Leicester’s tallest high-rise residential tower – Goscote House.
On the project, Leicester City Council quickly ruled out the possibility of a controlled explosion at Goscote House. Due to the densely packed neighbourhood around the 22-storey tower block and surrounding nearby properties, it was decided that the residential building would have to be taken down in stages through a process known as ‘debuilding’.
Fixtures and fittings are being stripped out before DSM starts work on the demolition phase of the 66m high residential building. The floor-by-floor external debuild is expected to be carried out over a 12-to-18-month period.
With sustainability and climate change becoming an ever-greater priority in construction, DSM have said many of the old materials, particularly the concrete panels from Goscote House, will be recycled as much as possible.
