Grundon opt for new Volvo EW240E materials handler
Company purchases its first waste-handling machine following successful trial
GRUNDON Waste Management have taken delivery of a new Volvo EW240E materials handler at their waste transfer and materials recovery facility (MRF) in Colnbrook, Berkshire.
Replacing a competitive model, the machine is being used to handle segregated waste material destined for a nearby incineration plant or for landfill.
While Grundon have operated Volvo equipment for many years on the aggregate segment of their business, this is the first Volvo materials handler the company has purchased.
‘We were looking for a change of supplier and the Volvo performed very well on demonstration, but our decision came down to the best deal at the time,’ commented Steve Fisher, Grundon’s divisional recovery and resources manager. ‘We also listened to the opinions of our operators who gave the Volvo the thumbs up and so far we’ve been very pleased with the way the machine has settled at Colnbrook.’
In total, around 50,000 tonnes of waste will be handled by the machine each year, including feeding a high-capacity mobile shredder that reduces larger and diverse material down to size.
Powered by a six-cylinder Volvo engine developing 171hp, the EW240E has been supplied with a 6.5m straight boom and 4m sorting arm with an Arden selector grab. Rigged in a way, the materials handler provides a maximum forward reach of 10m, a maximum height of 12m at the attachment pin and a 3.7-tonne lifting capacity at maximum reach across carriage with its outriggers down.
In addition to the machine’s standard hammer/shear lines, optional extras such as the X3 rotation circuit facilitate the use of the rotating selector grab.
The Volvo Care Cab offers a large roomy interior with plenty of leg room and foot space for the operator, with excellent all-round visibility enhanced by pressurized and filtered cab air supplied by a 14-vent climate-control system. An adjustable, easy-to-read LCD colour monitor provides real-time information on the machine functions.
The EW240E offers the operator the benefit of maximum visibility around the work area, thanks to the hydraulically raised and lowered cab that has a maximum elevation of 5.7m. Optional features of the materials handler include: a Fireward fire-suppression system; a Groeneveld twin greasing system; and flashing rear blue strobe lights.
The machine has also been been supplied with Volvo’s Blue service agreement, which ensures it is regularly maintained by Volvo trained engineers using genuine OEM parts.
