RJ McLeod add smaller Volvo excavators to fleet
First 14-tonne and 22-tonne Volvo excavators added to existing fleet of larger Volvo machines
GLASGOW-based RJ McLeod (Contractors) Ltd, one of Scotland’s largest privately owned civil engineering contractors, have taken delivery of two new 38-tonne Volvo EC380E excavators and, for the first time, added 14-tonne EC140 and 22-tonne EC220 models to their existing fleet of mobile plant equipment.
‘We’ve been running Volvo 36-tonne-plus sized excavators since 2010,’ commented RJ McLeod’s plant manager, Bill Paterson. ‘On the whole we’ve been very pleased with them and the after-market support we receive from Volvo’s support centre in Stirling has been equally acceptable, so as we were in the market to replace some of the older EC360s and needed to replace some smaller competitive makes in the fleet, we decided to opt for Volvo’s EC140E and EC20E models as well.’
As well as the two EC380Es, the latest package of machines includes two EC140Es and five EC220Es, which have been deployed on projects across the whole of Scotland. All of the new excavators feature Tier IV engines that are matched to the machines’ automatic sensing mode hydraulic system.
The machines feature an automatic idling system that reduces engine speed when the levers and pedals are not activated – aiding fuel efficiency and lowering external noise. When only a single function is being used, the two-pump hydraulics system combines the flow of both pumps for quick cycle times and greater productivity. It can also prioritize flow to the boom or arm according to the work being done.
The Volvo Care Cab, which is standard across the excavator range, offers a spacious interior and excellent all-round visibility with pressurized and filtered cab air supplied by a 14-vent, climate-control system.
In addition, an adjustable easy-to-read LCD colour monitor provides real-time information on machine functions, important diagnostic information and a wide variety of work tool settings. The screen also doubles as a monitor for the rear-view camera, which is fitted as standard.
