Roadtechs set UK record for asphalt rejuvenation in single shift

Nine kilometres of trunk road treated with Reclamite in less than five hours, with just 2.31 tonnes of CO2e produced

ROADTECHS Group, a UK leading manufacturer, supplier, and installer of specialist surface treatment solutions, have succeeded in treating a record-breaking 9km of trunk road with Reclamite in just under five hours.

Reclamite is a spray-applied rejuvenation treatment that reverses the detrimental impact of weather on roads, preventing the cracks and defects which can lead to potholes. It is the only BBA HAPAS-approved penetrative asphalt rejuvenator in the UK.

Roadtechs treated and extended the life of the A1066, a critical high-speed trunk road between the towns of Thetford and Diss in Norfolk, under a full road closure. In what is believed to be a UK first, two tankers worked in convoy to double the speed of application and treated 70,467m2, enabling the road to reopen less than five hours later, before the evening rush hour.

If this road was left to deteriorate it would need to be resurfaced costing £3.7 million with an 11-week full road closure.

Reclamite is said to be the most sustainable of all the surface treatments on the market today. The A1066 project generated only 2.31 tonnes CO2e. By comparison, fully resurfacing this road would produce 508 tonnes CO2e (based on 40mm SMA plane out and replace), requiring the planting of 506 trees over a 50-year period to offset these carbon emissions.

Roadtechs general manager Adam Lilley said: ‘This is the biggest area of highway we’ve ever treated in a single shift. We’re proud to support Norfolk County Council in delivering sustainable, high-performance road maintenance. We appreciate the patience of local road users and the respect shown to our crews.’

Cllr Graham Plant, cabinet member for highways, infrastructure and transport, said: ‘We’ve been using Reclamite for several years to keep our roads in good condition, and this latest project shows just how effective and efficient it can be. By treating more surface area in a single shift, we’ve delivered best value for Norfolk’s residents – minimizing disruption, reducing carbon emissions, and extending the life of our roads.’
