New package for Laird Aggregates

Forfar-based Laird Aggregates have taken delivery of a Volvo EC460BLC excavator and a Volvo L220E wheel loader for their sand and gravel extraction operation at Lochhead Quarry. The two Volvos join a new 400 tonnes/h 110 Nordberg mobile crusher supplied by Metso Minerals.

Laird Aggregates continue a family tradition of extracting sand and gravel, 90% of which is produced for the company’s own ready-mixed and block-making plant, with a small percentage going for use as asphalt sand. As long-standing users of Volvo Construction products, managing director Jim Laird commented: ‘We chose the products on offer from Volvo predominantly because they offer excellent comfort for our operators and, over time, have proved they are reliable machines to run.’

The three new machines will work as a team loading and crushing a mixture of material in the quarry, with the excavator feeding the Nordberg crusher and the loading shovel loading the processed material into Volvo articulated dumptrucks already in Laird’s fleet. The company’s aim is to keep on top of the diverse size and nature of the material, mainly made up of glacial deposits including large boulders, as work moves into a new two-year extraction and re-instatement phase.
