Gallagher complete Morrisons superstore in Eastbourne

Kent-based quarrying and construction group completes new Morrisons store ahead of schedule

GALLAGHER, the construction and quarrying group, have completed work on the building of a new superstore for Morrisons in the Hampden Park area of Eastbourne, on behalf of RG Group, one month ahead of schedule.

The recently opened superstore has been built on a 4.9-acre brownfield site and has 68,000 square feet of retail space on its first floor, a cafeteria and offices on its second floor, and a ground-floor warehouse.

To maximize the use of space, the store was built on stilts with undercroft car parking beneath it. There are also extensive external car parks and a petrol station.

Gallagher’s involvement included: cut and fill earthworks; construction of the ready-mixed concrete pile foundations, ground beams, retaining walls, service yard walls, dock levellers etc; construction of extensive below-ground petrol station fuel tanks; construction of ready-mixed concrete slabs for the service yards, recycling, retail, cafeteria, offices and warehouse areas; construction of undercroft and external car parks with spaces for 420 cars and 10 motorcycles; landscaping; and construction of local road access and improvements.

Aggregates for the project were supplied from Gallagher’s Hermitage Quarry, near Maidstone, with muck-away from the site being taken back to the quarry for recycling in the lorries that delivered the aggregates, thereby reducing the numbers of lorry trips between Eastbourne and Aylesford.

Nick Yandle, chief executive of Gallagher, commented: ‘This is a great new superstore for Eastbourne and we finished the project a month ahead of schedule.

‘Our involvement demonstrates the range of integrated services that Gallagher can offer, from civil engineering to aggregates and recycling.'
