British Geological Survey appoints Jonathan Ford to oversee the UK’s national geoscience programme

THE British Geological Survey (BGS) has announced the appointment of Jonathan Ford as the new director of BGS National Geoscience.

The national geoscience programme forms a core part of BGS and underpins its role as the UK’s national geological survey. The programme is a forward-looking investment in UK geology that provides relevant, coherent, and enriched geoscience knowledge for BGS stakeholders.

The programme also improves the understanding of the geology of the UK and its continental margin; it will provide enhanced interpretations of the UK’s sedimentary basins and basement in key areas for applied research and to support UK infrastructure.

Mr Ford, who has more than 24 years’ experience at BGS, will be based at the organization’s headquarters in Keyworth, Nottinghamshire. He will oversee the programme and the delivery of fundamental scientific research into new, quality-assured UK geological knowledge and data, both onshore and offshore, from mapping and modelling.

Having previously held the role of chief geologist for England at BGS, Mr Ford’s research has focused on developing geological datasets and knowledge, working with stakeholders to apply to this understanding and enable improved decision making. He is also a Chartered Geologist, European Geologist (EurGeol), and a Fellow of the Geological Society of London.

Mr Ford said: ‘I’m delighted to be appointed as the new director of BGS National Geoscience. We have a vital role to play in improving the understanding of the geology of the UK and I’m looking forward to working with my colleagues and partners to continue to deliver relevant and enriched geoscience knowledge for the wider public good.’

BGS director Dr Karen Hanghøj said: ‘Jonathan is an outstanding geologist with expertise in mapping and modelling, which continues to be an integral part of BGS, and I am delighted, on behalf of BGS and the BGS Board, to announce him in this important role.’
