Advancing the Centre of Excellence plans

National Stone Centre National Stone Centre

With 2025 now into its second quarter, this is an opportune time to update IQ members and the industry on our progress with the Centre of Excellence at the National Stone Centre (NSC) in Derbyshire. I have previously shared development news surrounding this project and I am pleased to report that we are now making significant strides forward.

Core funding has been secured and we are advancing into the next stage, focusing on finalizing the detailed design. This phase will establish the centre’s layout, functionality, and preferred construction method, ensuring that we showcase the best industry products in creating an efficient and sustainable building.

On the ground tangible progress is evident, with site surveys and test drilling recently conducted as part of the preparatory work leading to the construction phase. Having been involved in this initiative for over five years, it is incredibly rewarding to see these advancements taking shape.

A major part of this process has involved engaging with stakeholders and key user groups to ensure the building supports a wide range of activities as well as awareness of geology and the minerals sector. In the coming weeks and months members can expect further communications, as we seek additional feedback on how the centre can best serve our community regionally, nationally, and internationally.

The centre will celebrate the past, present, and future of geology and the minerals industry. Through strategic partnerships and collaborations, we are strengthening our ability to deliver on all three aspects. Our work with the Peak District Mining Museum reinforces the historical significance of mining and quarrying, while discussions with the University of Derby and other academic institutions are enhancing our capacity for research and innovation – staying true to our charitable mission of advancing the science and practice of quarrying.

This project is truly collaborative, as demonstrated by the involvement of the Mineral Products Qualification Council (MPQC) and the Institute of Asphalt Technology (IAT), whose contributions will further solidify the centre as a hub for industry standards and excellence.

As President, alongside my fellow honorary officers, I will continue to champion the centre and the project, actively seeking support and funding to bring it to completion. Our sector plays a crucial role in driving economic growth, both in the UK and globally. This initiative presents a valuable opportunity not only to highlight the sector’s current contributions to society, but also to inspire the next generation of talent to help shape its future.

This is the most ambitious project in the history of the Institute and it will play a vital role in achieving our broader objectives in the years ahead. I look forward to sharing further updates as we move into the next phases of development.
