A Year of Progress, People and Purpose
As we come to the end of 2025, I think many of us are ready for a breather. It has been a busy year right across the industry and across the Institute, and the festive period gives us all a welcome chance to slow down and spend time with the people who matter.
Looking back, one of the real highlights for me was last month’s Fellows’ Lunch. It is always a special moment in the IQ calendar, but this year it really struck me how much talent, passion, and commitment there is in our profession. From students and early-career professionals to long-serving members, the sense of pride in the room was incredible. The event also reminded me how important our branch network is. The branch officers, who give up their evenings and weekends to run CPD events, support members, and keep the community connected, rarely get the recognition they deserve. They are the heartbeat of the Institute – and the place where our industry ‘heartware’ is created. It is a powerful thing to see.
It is also pleasing to see this year’s award winners featured in this month’s magazine, showcasing the exceptional talent within our sector. The awards event once again highlighted the power of collaboration and the strength we have when we work together.
Internationally, this has been a year of real momentum. Speaking at the CONEX conference in Malaysia brought home just how quickly our world is changing. Digital tools, ESG expectations, and new technologies are reshaping what is required of our workforce. One message I shared there has stayed with me: technology can give us capability, but it is people who give us purpose. That is why our Carbon Literacy Programme and our work towards a Global Diploma in Sustainability are so important – they are about preparing our people for the future, not just keeping up with it.
The launch of our partnership with the National Security Institute in the UAE is another example of how IQ’s international reach continues to grow. It is genuinely exciting to see the impact we can have beyond the UK.
A particularly meaningful moment this year was introducing the Gordon Temple Award. Gordon was one of those people who shaped the Institute quietly but profoundly. His commitment, humility, and ability to lead by example influenced so many of us – myself included. Honouring him in this way feels right, and I know he would have been proud to see his legacy continued.
We have also made progress on the National Stone Centre, with encouraging steps taken towards securing an additional building on site. This project remains central to our long-term vision, and 2026 will be an important year in its development.
On a personal note, it has been a pleasure to meet colleagues and friends at the dinner dances held recently. I particularly enjoyed attending the Scottish branch event this year and experiencing their fantastic hospitality. These occasions remind us that we are not only a professional community but also one that celebrates together.
As we wrap up 2025, I want to thank every member, volunteer, partner, and colleague who has supported the Institute this year. It has genuinely been a privilege to serve as your President.
I hope you get the chance to rest, recharge, and enjoy the Christmas break. Wishing you a peaceful, healthy, and happy New Year – and I look forward to everything we will achieve together in 2026.
