New W100CFi compact planer from Wirtgen

First published in the January 2016 issue of Quarry Management

High productivity and a wide range of application options are two of the Wirtgen W100CFi milling machine’s key attributes, but the compact front loader, which sits in the 1.0m milling width class, is said to offer much more, including a multitude of new automatic functions to help speed up work processes and make the operator’s job considerably easier.

Equipped with eco-friendly engine technology in compliance with EU Stage IV/US Tier 4 Final, the W100CFi features numerous innovations alongside established Wirtgen features, all designed to optimize the milling process, ensure flexibility in use and greatly simplify operation of the machine.

Wirtgen say the chassis of the new W100CFi is distinctly narrower and affords the operator a better view to the front. In addition, the operator’s platform can be hydraulically displaced 200mm beyond the edge, thereby providing a clear view ahead to the milling drum assembly and the front right-hand crawler track. And, thanks to the machine’s camera system, the left-hand milled edge or material discharge is always clearly visible to the operator too, via a high-resolution display.

Precise milled results are assured by Level Pro Plus, a brand-new grade and slope control system developed by Wirtgen and integrated into the machine control system. The preset target milling depth is accurately controlled via robust displacement sensors located in the hydraulic cylinders, which are mounted on the side plates, and this is indicated on the high-resolution Level Pro Plus colour display.

All key data are indicated in colour on the operator display in the individually adjustable, multi-functional armrest. For the first time, four ‘favourite’ buttons, which can be programmed with 15 different optional functions, have been integrated in the armrest.

Higher performance equals higher output equals faster progress, say Wirtgen – and all this is possible thanks to innovations that allow the customer to respond optimally to different requirements on site. Among other things, the W100CFi features a 350PS engine which requires less fuel despite the high engine rating. Also, thanks to the new driving dynamics package, the 1.0m milling machine can travel at speeds of up to 7.5km/h, whilst three optionally selectable milling drum speeds ensure optimum milling output in accordance with requirements. Compared with the previous model, the W100CFi is said to achieve a 15% higher milling output.

Moreover, driving and steering innovations also help boost efficiency on the job site. A time-saving swivel mechanism allows the rear right-hand crawler track to be swivelled inwards quickly and automatically without lowering the milling drum. The third position for the rear right-hand crawler track is also new. Wirtgen say outstanding manoeuvrability is further ensured by the automatic tracking function of the rear right-hand crawler track when swivelled inwards and the increased steering angle of the front axle. As a result, the milling machine can describe very small turning circles.

The flexibility and performance of the W100CFi are assured by a number of other innovative solutions for milling and loading. Even on difficult job sites, such as roundabouts or junctions, material can be loaded without difficulty thanks to the extremely large conveyor slewing angle of 60° to the left or right, whilst for more precise loading, the machine operator can slew the conveyor at two different speeds.
