Training for Competence
AT the end of 2010, NVQs will be replaced by qualifications within the new Qualification and Credit Framework (QCF). While the standards against which people will be assessed will remain the same, the new QCF format will allow much greater flexibility in their application.
In order to help the industry understand the new system, the Mineral Products Qualifications Council (MPQC) has joined with the Institute of Quarrying (IQ) to hold a series of regional half-day workshops entitled ‘Training for Competence’, to present the new qualifications and their benefits in a down-to-earth and practical manner.
Two of the workshops have already taken place in Scotland and Bradford, and feedback from these events has been extremely positive.
Richard Bird, chief executive officer of the British Aggregates Association, said: ‘I attended the workshop in Scotland and found the presentations first class, but there is a fear that many may think this is just for HR people or training providers, when in fact all quarry managers and people at the sharp end should attend the workshops and learn about the new type of industry qualifications and how these fit in with the requirements of the Quarries Regulations.’
Two further workshop events are planned, the first in Loughborough on 2 December 2010, and the second in Bristol on 7 December. Both will feature keynote speakers from the HSE on the need for competence (Roy Bush in Loughborough and Cath Pickett in Bristol), as well as Graham Crawshaw of MPQC on understanding the QCF, Julian Smallshaw of IQ on the benefits to industry, Mike Phillips, also from IQ, on ongoing professional development, and Jonathan Ledger of Proskills on funding opportunities. Each workshop will be chaired by a representative from industry.
