Environmental Best Practice Award

Company clinches prestigious award for its highways term maintenance work in Nottinghamshire

A TEAM from Tarmac has clinched a top environmental award at the annual Considerate Constructors Scheme’s 2019 National Ultra Site Awards, which recognize supply chain integration.

The Environmental Best Practice Award was given for Tarmac’s work delivering the highways term maintenance contract for Nottinghamshire County Council (NCC) and its highway services company, Via East Midlands Ltd.

Tarmac were also one of the finalists in the Considerate Constructors Scheme’s Workforce Wellbeing award for the way they look after their employees.

The Environmental Best Practice award was given for the innovative way Tarmac recycle hazardous road-surfacing materials containing tar.

Contaminated planings are transported to a mobile recycling plant where they are treated to encapsulate the material, changing their designation from hazardous material to recycled product, which can then be reused again within the road network.

This process has saved the council £1.8 million through efficiencies made in savings on disposal costs and through the reduction in the amount of new or virgin aggregate used.

Tarmac are now working closely with NCC and Via East Midlands on creating a way to identify footways and carriageways which may contain contaminated materials.

Peter Hyde, Tarmac’s highway services director, said: ‘We’re delighted to receive this award for the environmental work we’ve undertaken in Nottinghamshire.

'It’s testament to the hard work, dedication and collaborative efforts of the team, coupled with a willingness to think outside the box and drive efficiencies while delivering challenging programmes.’

Nottinghamshire County Councillor John Cottee, committee chairman for communities and place, added: ‘This award win is great news and shows the value of partnership working.

‘We have collaborated with Tarmac to support this innovation as we are always keen to reduce the environmental impact of highway maintenance.’
