Company supplies two replacement in-line, double-deck vibrating asphalt screens to Tarmac Banbury

HEWITT Robins have supplied two replacement asphalt screens to Tarmac’s Banbury asphalt plant, where the existing Via Nova screens were at the end of their working life and experiencing regular bearing failures, causing excessive downtime for the site. The new 3.20m x 1.25m in-line double-deck asphalt screens were made to measure so that minimal modifications would be required to the existing plant.

One of the reasons why there were regular bearing problems with the existing screens is because the plant handles RAP material at temperatures up to 300C. Hewitt Robins’ solution was to design the new machines with the vibrating motors mounted outside the dust-encapsulation box and, more importantly, away from the high temperatures to avoid any premature bearing failures. Another advantage of this design was more access between the decks, making screen media changes easier and safer.

The two Hewitt Robins screens each came complete with two Oli MVE9000 vibrator motors fitted to a machined motor beam, support springs, spring base plates, and side-tensioned woven wire decks. Installation of the screens was completed by Austin Engineering Services, who also replaced the dust hood.

Delighted with how the job went, Tarmac Banbury unit manager Tim Homewood commented: ‘During our initial talks we were really happy with what Hewitt Robins were offering us and the improvements it would make to the site. The customized design has allowed us to fit superior screens into the existing installation with minimal modifications.

‘Given the historic problems with bearing failures on the previous screens with motor units between the decks, the new screens with the motors outside the dust encapsulation, away from the high temperatures, allow us to work on them a lot more easily and in a safer manner. Whilst it’s still early days, we are really happy with the screens’ performance and would have no hesitation in recommending Hewitt Robins for any future projects.’

Hewitt Robins are one of the world leaders in the design, manufacture, and supply of specialist vibrating screens and vibrating equipment for the mining, quarrying, recycling, bulk material, and other sectors.
