New Volvo fleet for Hall Construction Services
Package of 11 machines being deployed on overburden removal scheme at opencast gypsum mine
A PACKAGE of 11 Volvo articulated haulers and a 75-tonne EC750E mass excavator have re-established a long-standing relationship between Co. Durham-based Hall Construction Services Ltd and Volvo Construction Equipment.
So far, the EC750E together with six A40G articulated haulers have gone to work on a five-year overburden removal project to expose seams of high-purity gypsum at an opencast mine on the outskirts of Newark, in Nottinghamshire, where up to 2.8 million cubic metres of material is expected to be excavated each year.
A further five, slightly larger-capacity Volvo A45Gs are on order to supplement the fleet on site, which currently totals 28 items of mobile plant.
‘We’ve had many years of experience operating Volvo products in applications ranging from bulk muck shifting to coal extraction, particularly in the north-east of England and Scotland,’ commented managing director Stephen Hall.
‘They have a sound pedigree in terms of reliability and performance, with good residuals. Equally, Volvo have a strong support network throughout the country and this is important to us as we look to undertake nationwide projects such as this one in Newark.’
The latest G-series haulers from Volvo meet the requirements of Stage IV final emissions legislation, being powered by electronically controlled, six-cylinder, turbocharged Volvo V-ACT diesel engines.
Offering high torque at low engine speeds, the purpose-built Volvo engine delivers good fuel efficiency, high performance, quicker engine response, less wear and longer service life, and is designed to exactly match the Volvo drivetrain to ensure best use of power and torque, even in tough working conditions.
With carrying capacities of 39 and 41 tonnes, respectively, the A40G and A45G haulers can attain a maximum speed of 53km/h. To maximize the volume capability of the trucks (due to the friable nature of the overburden at the Newark site), Hall Construction have added 300mm side extensions to the truck bodies, in order to handle five passes from a 5.7 cubic metre bucket.
The haulers are fitted with Volvo’s CareTrack telematics system as standard, which allows remote monitoring of a wide range of machine functions (location, fuel consumption, service reminders etc) to help optimize customer operations.
Offering a combination of power and stability, and building on the successful legacy of the EC700 crawler excavator, the new 75-tonne class EC750E features advanced fuel-efficient technology that ensures responsive operation for maximum productivity and profitability.
Powered by a Volvo 16-litre Stage IV diesel engine that develops 508hp, the EC750E also features innovative electro-hydraulic technology for greater operator control and productivity.
Equipped in mass-excavation configuration, the EC750E delivered to Hall Construction boasts a 5.7 cubic metre bucket, a 6.6m boom and a 2.9m dipper arm, giving the machine a forward reach of 11.46m, a maximum digging depth of 7.21m, a load-over height of 7.0m and a bucket breakout force 383kN in power max mode.
