Steve Millburn

Company expands materials team with appointment of Steve Millburn as director of operations (East)

FM Conway have appointed Steve Millburn to a new role as head of their aggregates and asphalt operations (East), as they continue to grow their materials manufacturing capabilities.

Formerly operations director at Brett Aggregates, Mr Millburn brings nearly 30 years of experience in the industry to FM Conway.

He will oversee the efficient operation of FM Conway’s asphalt manufacturing plants at Erith and Croydon, as well as the company’s bitumen terminal and polymer-modified bitumen (PMB) plant at Imperial Wharf, and its Dartford recycling centre.

FM Conway own and operate a network of asphalt manufacturing plants across London and the south of England, with a focus on developing and supplying high-performance materials for the strategic and local highways networks.

The business also operates its own research and development laboratory to create more resilient and sustainable road materials to improve durability and support more efficient construction methods.

Working closely with the University of Nottingham and the University of New Hampshire, the company recently released pioneering research into the effects of large-scale manufacturing on the properties of asphalt to better model real-world performance.

Tim Metcalf, executive director of aggregates and asphalt at FM Conway, commented: ‘FM Conway’s aggregates and asphalt division has experienced great success over the past few years, continuing to grow and drive materials innovations with the potential to transform the highways industry.

‘With his vast experience in the sector, I’m confident that Steve will further support our vision to be the leading manufacturer and supplier of high-performance products for both the strategic and local road networks.’

Commenting on his new role, Mr Millburn (pictured) said: ‘FM Conway’s material capabilities have helped distinguish the business from its competitors while delivering efficiencies for customers. It’s a market leader in recycling and, through its academic partnerships, is creating advanced road construction products to help prepare the industry for future challenges.

‘I’m looking forward to ensuring we stay at the forefront of innovation in the sector, creating leading materials which offer value for money for customers and a better travelling experience for all road users.’
