New Bomag ‘hybrid-drive’ tandem roller makes entrance at Hillhead

Bomag, the world leader in compaction technology, is launching a new pivot-steered tandem roller in the 10 tonne class that features ‘hybrid-drive, a world first. The machine will be exhibited at the Hillhead 2010 exhibition.

Based on the successful BW174AP, the latest fourth generation model features a host of innovations including hybrid-drive, an ergonomic cab, and new operating controls.

The Bomag BW174 AP AM hybrid roller has an electric motor/generator, a high capacity battery, and associated electronics. Operation is simple and efficient. The battery is charged by the generator when braking, reversing or during vibration shutdown using the momentum of the 10 tonne machine. Power peaks are levelled out when the electric motor takes power from the battery, when switching on vibration or during acceleration. The hybrid roller uses a smaller capacity diesel engine than a conventional machine and the engine always operates at optimum performance and efficiency. This lowers fuel consumption and associated CO2 emissions. Initial tests show a fuel saving of up to 3% is feasible.

BOMAG pivot-steered tandem rollers are renowned for their high performance capability, superb manoeuvrability, exceptional driving and operational convenience, and great flexibility. The new cab and controls, which are the result of ergonomic studies, are exceptional developments. The new ‘active armrest system’ combines with a hand-shaped travel lever for easier operating use. The consoles are adjustable to suit the operator and the inward curving armrests ensure that the operators’ arms rest securely to control the roller comfortably throughout long shifts. The combined seat and operating unit can be turned 270° and extended sideways for added comfort and visibility. At the same time switches integrated in the travel lever and consoles are always within reach of the operator. This allows intuitive operations for maximum safety and productivity.

With the new ECOMODE engine management system Bomag now offers users, arguably, the most economical roller in its class. Tests conducted by Bomag show fuel savings of over 20% compared to previous models. An intelligent sensor system instantly calculates the power requirements of the machine in operation and the computer adjusts the speed of the Kubota engine automatically to match power to demand. This action reduces fuel consumption, engine emissions and noise levels.

The high-specification integrated sprinkler system ensures that drums are kept wet even in windy conditions. The system offers high protection from down-time with its back-up pump system, central drainage and triple filtering. A water saving feature combined with a tank capacity of 750 litres means that active work periods can be extended.

Protection from vandalism rounds off this well thought-out machine. Great care has been taken to reduce the risk of damage on remote sites. The cab doors, engine compartment doors, water tank and diesel tank can all be locked. Rollers are frequently moved between sites which mean they must be easy to tie down on truck beds. The BW174AP has newly designed lashing eyes and tow hooks that make it even easier to load and secure the roller safely.

The standard equipment is impressive, but it doesn’t end there. A wide range of ‘factory-fit’ options are available for the BW174AP. The new roller has an array of new options that include a second edge cutter, a 230 V generator, a by-pass filter, special outside mirrors, and electronic theft protection. The Bomag TELEMATIC telemetry system transfers operational data and can also track and provide theft protection. The system does more than just display the current position on a map. Virtual fences (called geofences) can be defined so the system recognises when boundaries are crossed. If boundaries are crossed the system will send warnings by text and e-mail. The new BS180-2 chip spreader is an impressive addition to the option list. Based on the proven and patented vibrating screed with linear exciter, it’s perfectly suited to work on this new roller. It features uniform and accurate spreading, a generous storage capacity of 900 litres, durability and reliability making it ideal for everyday use on tough sites.
