New 80-tonne excavator from Hyundai

HYUNDAI have expanded their Robex crawler excavator range with the introduction of the 80-tonne R800LC-7A, which is aimed specifically at the quarrying and mining industries. This new ‘workhorse’ of the Hyundai range will make its debut at the Bauma 2007 exhibition in Munich in April.

Weighing 81.5 tonnes and with a 3.4m3 bucket capacity, the newly designed machine is powered by an Cummins QSX 15 Tier 3-compliant common-rail diesel engine that delivers a power output of 343kW (466hp). A new, fully integrated and space-saving engine-control unit (ECU) offers 10 times the storage and computation capacity as previous models, for more efficient and intelligent engine management.

Hyundai are also using a new generation of their tried and tested CAPO (computer-aided power optimization) system to monitor and control the machine functions, with self-diagnostic capabilities should anything go wrong. In ‘power boost’ mode, this system provides extra power for particularly heavy work, with 10% more breakout force available at the push of a button. In ‘crusher or hammer mode’, the pressure supply is immediately cut off if the jaws or hammer break through unexpectedly, thereby preventing unnecessary wear and tear on the equipment. Individual setting preferences of the driver can be saved for future retrieval.

For improved durability in quarrying and mining applications, Hyundai say all parts of the excavator structure that are required to cope with particularly high levels of stress have been reinforced. In addition, heavy-duty electronic cables and water- and dust-resistant plug connections and additional safety features in a sealed fuse box minimize the liklihood of disruption to electrics and electronics.

To minimize maintenance costs and improve operational efficiency, the machine is equipped with an automatic lubrication system and all major control and maintenance points have been designed for maximum accessibility, while the hydraulic oil filter change interval is set at 1,000 operating hours.

For operator comfort, the R800LC-7A is equipped with a spacious, ergonomically designed cab offering a high degree of visibility and minimal noise levels. A high-efficiency air-conditioning system, 40-litre capacity warm/cool box and generous tool storage space are also provided.
