MPA Transport Initiatives Award for Tarmac
Company drives away with award in recognition of improvements at Glasgow Dry Silo Mortar plant
TARMAC have won the Transport Initiatives Award at the MPA Health and Safety Awards 2016, in recognition of improvements to the vehicle and pedestrian movement plan at the company’s Glasgow Dry Silo Mortar plant.
The team’s submission was focused on the challenge of increasing on-site capacity (and thus traffic) and finding ways of reducing risk. Risk identification processes including site walks and hazard spotting helped Tarmac to develop a new movement plan to reduce the risk of accidents.
Adam Green, Tarmac’s senior operations manager for UK mortars and screeds, said: ‘We’re delighted to be recognized for the ideas we’ve implemented in an attempt to work to our target of zero harm.
‘The health and safety of our employees is the primary focus for us as a business and winning this award as a great way of showing our employees that our good work is being recognized and rewarded.’
The company was also ‘Highly Commended’ for its ongoing work on a number of projects in different parts of the business.
Contractor engagement was one area of focus, with employees demonstrating a commitment that has resulted in improved contractor safety in Tarmac’s Marine business. A new process of contractor forums and knowledge-sharing exercises has been implemented within the team’s supply chain.
Also acknowledged was work on an engineered process for automatically measuring block heights and reducing operator access to moving machinery.
