Rachel Taylor MP discusses how foundation industries can support the UK’s growth ambitions

RACHEL Taylor, Member of Parliament for North Warwickshire and Bedworth, has visited Cemex’s Coventry Readymix plant to learn more about the company’s contributions to the local building and construction sectors and its commitment to becoming a more sustainable business through the production of lower-carbon cements and building materials.

During the visit, Ms Taylor met with Cemex representatives to discuss the plant’s role in supplying concrete for projects across the Coventry and wider West Midlands region. She was also given an in-depth tour of the facility, where she observed Cemex’s production processes, including efforts to reduce carbon emissions and promote circular economy practices through the wider use of recycled materials.

Speaking about the visit in her North Warwickshire and Bedworth constituency, Ms Taylor said: ‘Visiting Cemex’s Coventry Readymix plant in Exhall gave me the opportunity to see how Cemex are supporting local economic growth in the region through the role they play across the building and construction supply chain.

‘Foundation industries such as the mineral products sector, are essential to support the UK’s wider growth ambitions through the provision of vital construction materials that support house building and infrastructure, and help to maintain our roads and highways.’

Cemex boast a proud heritage across the Midlands region with their UK head office in Coventry and one of the largest cement plants in the country based in Rugby, Warwickshire – a plant that can trace its operations back to 1826 when a small family business owned by Thomas Walker and his son started producing lime mortar in the area.

Dan Mann, Cemex’s senior public affairs lead, commented: ‘We were delighted to welcome Rachel Taylor to our site in Exhall, Coventry, and showcase how Cemex are supporting local building and construction projects through the provision of more sustainable products and solutions in the construction sector.

‘It’s important that foundation industries such as ours, which play a vital role in supporting wider economic growth and provide local employment opportunities, are recognized for the support we provide to economic growth across many other sectors, such as house building, construction, infrastructure, clean energy, and advanced manufacturing.’
