Creusabro anti-abrasion steels from IMS UK

IMS UK, distributors and processors of high-yield steels, have continued to prove the wear-resistant qualities of their Creusabro range of steels. Tests conducted in a Bulgarian copper mine, say the company, showed that a Creusabro-lined bucket outperformed a water-quenched 500HB bucket by over 1,160h (46% more working time).

IMS UK produce two grades of Creusabro steels – 4800 and 8000 – designed to provide optimum balance between wear resistance and easy processing, making them suitable for the harsh working environments of the mining, quarrying and cement industries.

Since announcing the results of the tests, the popularity of the high-performance wear-resistant steel has increased and IMS have seen high demand for the product. ‘Customers are seeing the benefits of the Creusabro range of steels, with its ability to exhibit very good aptitude to processing,’ said Adrian Hance, IMS UK divisional director. ‘Not only does it have high abrasion-resistant qualities, the hardness of the steel facilitates processing operations, such as cutting, machining and forming.’

In the cement industry, for example, Creusabro 4800 was used to fabricate a large manifold for conveying hot gases from a kiln to a preheat tower at a operating temperature of between 300 and 350°C. A water-quenched steel used in the same application, say IMS, would have suffered temper back, reducing hardness.

On another project, a hard rock quarry operator successfully reduced the weight of its modular lining tiles by 40%, by substituting a 25mm thick water-quenched 400HB grade with a 15mm thick Creusabro 8000 grade – resulting in a cost-effective increase in wear life – while resolving numerous on-site health and safety issues.
