CEMEX deliver humanitarian assistance to Haiti
CEMEX announced this week that approximately US$750,000 have been raised in company contributions to help support emergency relief efforts in Haiti, with donations from more than 2,500 employees in 29 countries. Additionally, the company has undertaken local support activities and provided humanitarian assistance following last month’s earthquake.
The CEMEX community established a fund to collect voluntary contributions from its personnel worldwide, with the company matching every employee donation on a two-for-one basis.
CEMEX have 115 employees in Haiti and the funds raised will be directed to the support of them, their families and neighboring communities, and toward homebuilding efforts for people affected by the earthquake.
Through a rapid-response effort, the company has already delivered three shipments of basic goods, including food, home supplies, medicine and medical care, from Mexico and the Dominican Republic.
CEMEX have also made available their heavy machinery in Haiti to assist relief teams in their efforts, and assigned their vessel ‘Marianela’ with the task of delivering 90 tons of direct aid sent from Mexico, which was gathered by the CEMEX community and its customers.
The company has three cement import terminals in Haiti, two of which are located in the badly affected Port-au-Prince area. Fortunately, the three facilities suffered minimal damage during the quake and both terminals in Port-au-Prince have since resumed operations.
CEMEX, who are one of the major cement suppliers in the region, say they plan to continue to contribute to the rebuilding of Haiti, including through the extension of the company’s social self-construction programmes aimed at home building for low-income families.
