Bomag to launch new tandem rollers at Hillhead 2012

New 4-5-tonne class tandem rollers feature world's first optional integral compaction control technology

BOMAG, market leaders in compaction technology, will use the Hillhead exhibition (19-21 June in Buxton) to launch their new tandem rollers in the 4-5 tonne weight class.

Following-on from the successful launch of the first ‘Dash-5’ models at Ascot in May 2011, BOMAG will launch a further three new models in the UK at Hillhead, namely the BW 135 AD-5, BW 138 AD-5 and the BW 138 AC-5 combination model. All three machines follow the ‘Dash-5’ design ethos with a sloping composite bonnet for excellent visibility, superior operator ergonomics, and improved operator space and legroom for high safety and productivity.

The three new models continue the trend, set last year, as efficient and economical water-cooled four-cylinder Kubota diesel engines, meeting European stage 3A emission standards, power them all.

Following a long tradition of innovation, in compaction technology, the new BOMAG models have as an option, for the first time on a tandem roller, integrated ‘real time’ compaction measurement. The BOMAG Economizer system, previously only available on reversible vibrating plate compactors, can reduce fuel consumption and emission by up to 25%. The Economizer system allows continuous control of the compaction process. An increasing number of illuminated yellow light-emitting diodes (LEDs) on the display indicate increased compaction under the machine. When the number of LEDs lit does not increase with repeated passes, the machine has achieved the maximum compaction possible. This informs the operator that no more passes are required, saving the contractor time and money. If the number of yellow LEDs suddenly drops, this indicates weak spots in the material. The Economizer system identifies weak spots as the job progresses. Remedying soft spots immediately saves expensive and time-consuming re-work. A red LED indicates a warning of over-compaction. Economizer optimizes compaction performance and cost and results in a high and consistent compaction quality across the rolled area.

The powerful exciter system has 0.5mm amplitude, whilst a high-performance, low-loss, hydraulic circuit provides best in class compaction performance. The compaction drum diameter is now 900mm, up from 810mm, to provide an even better surface quality.

The three new tandems feature high-capacity water tanks for the sprinkler system, holding up to 310 litres. The combination of a water-saving concept, fine spray nozzles, and automatic sprinkler control minimizes water consumption. This means that time-consuming tank refills are less common. A reliable membrane pump supplies the drums with water. The spring-actuated scrapers give optimum distribution of water, and are easily accessible and quick to clean.

The deep-set engine bonnet and angled frame offer excellent visibility ahead and to the lower edges of the drum, without the driver needing to leave the seated position. All new models offer the operator improved space and legroom. The vibration-insulated suspended operator’s platform is easy to access; the adjustable seat and matching armrests shift sideways and feature a double travel lever as standard. Clearly arranged operating controls, which include durable rotary switches, on the dashboard are operated intuitively for operator safety and convenience.

The dashboard also includes modern circular instrument displays with audible warning signals, an operating hour counter, and a fuel tank level indicator. The newly designed ‘Smart Drive’ steering wheel provides the operator with an uninterrupted view of the dashboard and, in conjunction with the multifunctional control lever, machine operation is convenient, functional, and precise.

Transport is easy too. Large easy access lashing rings, a practical single lifting point and integrated towing hook secure the rollers and reduce loading times. The one-piece engine hood, manufactured from a durable composite material, is a unique design that gives excellent operator visibility to the drum. The gas-loaded, folding ROPS handle is now also standard.

It is expected that the new models will cost 15% more than the models they replace. Final pricing will be announced at Hillhead. BOMAG Finance offer a wide range of competitive hire purchase and leasing options for new BOMAG equipment bought in the UK.
