From learning to leadership
In our profession and sector, we often talk about competence, generally agreed to be a combination of knowledge, skills, and experience.
As President of the Institute, I firmly believe that throughout our history we have played a leading role in supporting our members in developing their knowledge throughout their careers. The great strength of our organization lies in its members, whose combined knowledge, skills, and experience represent an invaluable resource for our industry.
As we head towards the end of 2025, I have had the privilege of attending a range of events that reinforce the value of that knowledge, our network, and our collaborative approach. Having recently returned from the International Presidents’ meeting hosted by our sister IQ in Malaysia, I have once again seen the great opportunities for us, as a global network, to share knowledge and experiences that advance our profession. The Caernarfon Award, judged by the International Presidents at the meeting, showcases exemplary knowledge shared by our members worldwide. This knowledge collectively enhances our understanding of the profession.
As this edition of QMJ reaches you, I will be attending the Fellows’ Lunch, an event that has grown in strength over the last few years, not least because of the value of our partnership with the Institute of Asphalt Technology (IAT) and our joint relationship with the Centre for Mineral Products at the University of Derby.
For me, the event encapsulates the very essence of celebrating collaboration in developing knowledge and supporting both current and future generations of leaders. It is always particularly pleasing to have our Fellows and Honorary Fellows attend the event, given their long and distinguished careers within the industry and also the Institute.
I have always believed that maintaining and broadening my knowledge has been a critical part of my professional development – from taking my early initial qualifications through to attending technical events, meetings, and conferences as I have progressed into more senior roles.
I am proud that the Institute, working collaboratively with its partners, supports that journey – from those just beginning their careers to those of us who have long served in the sector.
As we begin to look towards 2026 and beyond, I, along with my honorary officer colleagues and the IQ board, am determined that we continue to enhance and develop the role of the Institute in the development of the knowledge that will support our members to deliver an industry that we are all proud of.
