Embracing growth and innovation in our industry

Taffs Well Quarry study tour

As I write this month’s column, it’s clear that the Institute is entering an especially busy period, with activities coming in rapid succession. A quick look at the events page on our website confirms that we are offering a diverse range of events for both our members and the wider industry.

It’s particularly encouraging to see our proactive branches actively supporting member CPD through a rich selection of technical evenings, complemented by key social events. With so many opportunities available, a particular highlight for our members I’m sure will be the IQ Scottish branch’s CPD Day later this month. These safety day events provide a valuable opportunity to stay informed about key industry developments, helping us maintain our professional knowledge in an ever-evolving sector.

Another noteworthy event is IQ Yorkshire branch’s annual dinner dance, where I know the opportunity will be taken to raise a glass in memory of Gordon Temple FIQ. Gordon was a colleague, mentor and good friend, and an inspiration for me with regards to the role IQ plays within our industry both personally and professionally.

One of the most exciting developments this month is the formal launch of the Emerald Challenge. The returning initiative, conceived by long-standing member Steve Cole Hon FIQ, aims to support and recognize IQ members as they develop projects and research ideas to address global sustainability challenges. Key areas of focus include decarbonization and biodiversity, with an annual £5,000 grant awarded to an IQ Technical Member (TMIQ), Member (MIQ), or Fellow (FIQ) whose work contributes to their organization’s goals toward Net Zero Carbon.

As President, I am immensely proud to see members like Steve championing initiatives that drive the Institute forward in its commitment to a more sustainable future. Our industry and profession continue to evolve, and it is essential that we, as your Institute, support your ongoing professional development while celebrating the innovations that will shape a better, more sustainable world.

On a broader industry level, I found my trip to the Mining Indaba tradeshow in South Africa last month to be extremely valuable. Connecting with industry professionals on an international scale, I discussed the demands facing the sector as it navigates a global mineral demand. Our discussions also centred around the vital roles communities play in shaping the industry’s future, and the solutions and technologies being designed to improve sustainability.

Finally, in my column this month, I’m pleased to announce the relaunch of both the Quarries National Joint Advisory Committee (QNJAC) and Safequarry websites. Both platforms have undergone significant updates and improvements, bringing them closer together to create a more collaborative approach to industry support and information sharing. Enhancing safety and health within our sector remains a top priority, and we all recognize that the best way to achieve progress in this area is through collaboration.
