Construction logistics is a significant contributor to CO2 emissions, and Swedish truck manufacturing giant Scania have vowed to further strengthen their sustainability priorities with the introduction of new, groundbreaking electrified, hybrid, and zero-emission power solutions for the heavy building materials sector

Scania’s pragmatic approach to sustainable transportation is based on three pillars (energy efficiency, renewable fuels/electrification, and smart and safe transport) that aim to create a cleaner, safer, and more efficient construction transport ecosystem.

Proactively reducing their environmental impact has always been, and continues to be, a major component of Scania’s sustainability efforts. At the recently held bauma 2025 exhibition, the truck manufacturer showcased a comprehensive range of all-electric and hybrid power solutions for the construction and mining industries.

Visitors to the Scania stand experienced how the company’s latest truck innovations can help them transition toward environmental sustainability while prioritizing efficiency and power. Responding to the construction industry’s evolving challenges and varying needs, the Swedish OEM promoted its existing and well-proven range of fuel-efficient combustion engine options, offering customers the flexibility to choose the best fit for their operations.

Key products on display included the Scania BEV XT Tipper with tandem bogie – a battery-electric tipper truck developed in response to the construction industry’s net-zero challenge. The vehicle has been built to combine maximum traction with high performance and sustainability.

Scania were also showcasing reliable and fuel-efficient power generation systems for demanding working environments, including a CBG tipper tractor unit powered by compressed biogas with an extended range and lower CO2 emissions, as well as a heavy-duty 8x4/four-trailer setup using the company’s highly acclaimed V8 engine, which can now run on HVO (hydrogenated vegetable oil).

‘More and more infrastructure and construction project procurements require, or offer incentives for, zero-emission vehicles,’ said Stefano Fedel, executive vice-president of sales and marketing at Scania. ‘Today, many European cities already have zero-emission zones, and the number is growing. Scania are driving the shift to sustainability, with powerful and efficient zero-emission and low-carbon solutions designed for demanding construction and mining jobs now and in the future.

‘We understand our customers’ needs for flexibility and customized solutions depending on the type of application. Whether it’s combustion engines, biogas, or battery-electric technology, they shouldn’t have to compromise on robustness, availability, or total operational efficiency.’

Scania have announced that they will roll out a new line-up of electric motors and battery packs. The in-house developed system combines a central control unit, an inverter, and batteries with a combustion engine for parallel hybrid operation.

The low noise level during electric operation makes the unit suitable for urban environments. It provides operators a better working environment, while the hybrid mode offers extra power and range when needed.

Collaborative approach

From delivering battery-electric trucks to expanding charging networks, Scania’s commitment to a net-zero future has led the heavy-duty truck manufacturer to establish strategic cross-sector partnerships with suppliers, customers, infrastructure providers, and government decision-makers to pilot and scale solutions, driving the shift towards a sustainable transport ecosystem.

Scania, for example, have recently teamed up with Italy-based Cometto to launch a new, fully electric, self-propelled modular transporter (SPMT) for heavy load transportation operations. Designed for demanding industries such as mobile plant relocation, heavy engineering, and wind energy, the innovative trailer incorporates Scania’s electrification technology, providing impressive torque, extended battery life, rapid charging capabilities, and low noise with zero-emission operations.

‘For over 50 years, Cometto has been at the forefront of special transport innovation,’ commented Adrian Zingan, Cometto’s product manager. ‘Our partnership with Scania – trusted for decades for their diesel engines – now continues successfully into electrification. Scania’s integrated electric powerpacks ensure top-tier performance and efficiency.’
