What’s New at Hillhead 2012?
In just over a month’s time, Tarmac’s Hillhead Quarry, near Buxton, Derbyshire, will once again host the world’s biggest working quarry show, which takes place from 19-21 June. More than 400 UK and international suppliers of plant, equipment, materials and services will be in attendance with a huge range of exhibits on static display and/or live demonstration. Many of the exhibitors will be using Hillhead as a platform for the launch of their latest products and offerings. The following pages provide a brief glimpse of just some of the new equipment, systems and services that visitors to the show will be able to see on display for the first time.
Ammann Equipment Ltd will be exhibiting an updated and improved line-up of excavator attachments designed to deliver both versatility and utilization for operators. There will also be an interactive demonstration of Ammann’s next-generation AS1 plant control system with key features such as Dynamic RAP, Ecoview and Excel Addin, which have all been designed to maximize plant efficiency and reduce operating costs.
ArcGen Hilta return to Hillhead with a wide selection of products geared for use in the quarrying industry, including the new Hilta C150 ‘Pro-Flo’ 6in centrifugal vacuum-assisted automatic priming pump, a low-pressure/high-volume machine, developed to offer increased performance for customers. This is also the first time that ArcGen Hilta will be appearing at Hillhead since acquiring SMC Light & Power in 2010, and they will therefore be exhibiting their market-leading range of lighting towers.
First time exhibitors Asphalt Burner Services will be using Hillhead 2012 to promote the newly manufactured Vulcan burner range. The new range comes with innovative features such as excess air control, combustion chamber optimization and air pressure compensation, that raise the standards for asphalt production.
With new exhaust emission legislation coming into effect, E.P. Barrus will be showing the latest Tier 3 and Tier 4 John Deere emission-certified engines, including the 13.5-litre PSX (448kW), 9-litre PSX IT4 (317kW) and 6.8-litre PVX IT4 (224kW) units.
Visitors to the Bell stand will be able get a glimpse of the future with the unveiling of the manufacturer’s much-anticipated E-Series articulated dumptruck (due to go into production in 2013), which will feature a new-shape hood, more imposing styling and extensive technological improvements.
Bomag will be launching new tandem rollers in the 4-5-tonne weight class, namely the BW 135 AD-5, BW 138 AD-5 and the BW 138 AC-5 combination model. All three machines follow the ‘Dash-5’ design ethos with a sloping composite bonnet for excellent visibility, superior operator ergonomics, and improved operator space and legroom for safety and productivity. The company will also be exhibiting a BF 800P paver, BM 500/15 milling machine and BW154AD-4 Asphalt Manager. In addition, a Bomag BF 800 paver will be shown for the first time in the UK. With paving widths from 2.50m to 10m, the machine is powered by a 139kW six-cylinder Deutz engine featuring low noise and exhaust emissions, making it suitable for medium- to large-scale road construction projects.
Boss Cabins will be exhibiting their brand new Big Space anti-vandal welfare cabin, which, they say, is the UK’s most flexible road towable welfare cabin. The cabin is VCA-approved and is configured to be 0.6m longer than the company’s standard Comfort Space unit.
Brigade Electronics’ demonstration truck will be on display at Hillhead this year with all the latest vehicle safety products, including the company’s new wireless camera-monitor system. The wireless system eliminates the need to run cables along the vehicle, reducing fitting time and preventing cables from becoming damaged, which is especially relevant for articulated machinery. The company will also be showing its Xtreme Backsense pulsed radar sensor system, which has been re-engineered with a new moulded cable connector to increase water resistance and make it even more robust with improved precision down to only 60cm from the sensor.
A new range of semi-automatic horizontal balers from CK International will be making its debut at Hillhead. The CK850 series baler features a large hopper for easier feeding of large volumes of waste from loading shovels or grabs. It also has a high compaction force so maximum container weights can be achieved.
As usual, ConSpare will be showcasing a wide selection of new concrete production equipment and spare parts, including Matrox ultra low-friction, abrasion-resistant polyethylene wear liners; ExtraChrome Snake block machine table plates; a Monitor SiloPatrol inventory management system; Hawiflex polyurethane wear tiles; and Hawipair liquid polyurethane for on site repairs.
Cordless power tool specialists DEWALT will be introducing their newly expanded XR Lithium Ion range, which now comes with three-year warranty, 1.5ah or 3.0ah Li-ion batteries and a universal charger (10.8V, 14.4V and 18 XR Li-ion batteries) for enhanced work efficiency.
Doosan Infracore Construction Equipment will be exhibiting and demonstrating a host of new products at the show, including the DL550-3 and DL450-3 wheel loaders, and their largest ADT model to date, the DA40. The company will also be introducing the new Bobcat 2.6-tonne zero-tail-swing E26 compact excavator, along with the popular S130 skid-steer loader. In addition, Doosan will unveil their latest high-capacity telehandler range offering a maximum lift height up to 10m and lifting capacities from 7-21 tonnes.
ESAB, leading manufacturers of welding and cutting equipment, will be hitting the road with the ESAB Demobus at Hillhead 2012 in conjunction with Truflame, one of their UK distributors. The newly launched OrigoMig 4004i/5004i, a multi-process MIG/MAG/MMA/TIG machine, will be shown along with all the latest welding and cutting machines, personal protective equipment and welding accessories. In addition, there will be a special focus on repair and maintenance welding consumables.
EDGE Innovate will be showcasing their latest range of mobile bulk-handling equipment, including the 626 trommel which has been developed to offer new options for operators requiring high throughputs, large feed sizes and a high-quality end product.
On the FLSmidth stand will be a display of the company’s latest TS design of gyratory crusher, which allows maintenance to be carried out entirely from the top. The company will also be exhibiting the Excel Raptor cone crusher and machines developed specially for the global mining market.
FSL Electronics will be introducing their latest range of engine control panels, remote level sensing displays, Ultrabeam radio control solutions, I-Spi plant tracking and remote switch-off systems, and industrial LED displays. FSL also design and manufacture industrial control panels (eg engine starter panels) for a broad range of industries.
New to Hillhead will be Gemex – a hydraulically operated system, distributed in the UK and Ireland by Novusgot, designed to simplify the installation of belt-drive power transmissions and remove the difficulties associated with conventional systems. It allows efficient maintenance when changing belts and makes checking the belt tension quicker and easier, improving overall equipment operation. A standard horizontal Gemex unit will be on display to demonstrate the basic principles of operation.
New and proven models from HPC KAESER’s renowned portable compressor range will be among the highlights on their stand. The new M250 unit, for example, features the innovative and advanced SIGMA Control mobile (SCM) engine and compressor management control system, and combines a free air delivery of 25.0m3/min (883cfm) at 10 bar(g) with high levels of dependability and efficiency.
Hillhead 2012 will see Herbst Machinery launch their next-generation tracked screener – the Herbst Compac S52 – which boasts two-way split capabilities and state-of-the-art folding from standard transport mode.
Hycontrol, specialists in solids and liquids measurement, will also be using Hillhead as a launch pad for their new SPS 2000 silo protection pod. The SPS 2000 is said to be the world’s first fully integrated silo overfill protection system, which is simply fitted via a single flange at the top of the silo, while all the critical components can be tested at ground level before every fill.
As well as displaying a selection of breakers, fixed/rotating pulverizers and compactors for machines weighing from 0.7 to 57 tonnes, Indeco (UK) will also be showing a new range of steel shears and sorting grabs for the UK market.
JCB will be showcasing their latest range of products for the quarrying and aggregates industries, including UK debuts for models from their heavyline and compact ranges. Among the new exhibits will be the JCB 457 WLS wheel loader, which replaces the 456, the JS360, JS260 and JS220 tracked excavators and 8026 CTS mini-excavator. All of JCB’s tracked excavators have been significantly enhanced with a new cab, improved styling and major efficiency increases across the range. At the opposite end of the JCB excavator line-up, the 2.7-tonne JCB 8026 CTS offers customers compact design and increased digging capacity. It uses a dedicated boom and dipper arm, offering greater digging and lifting performance. JCB will also be showing one of their latest new-generation skid-steer loader models that use a radial lift version of the JCB Powerboom single-sided lift arm, providing maximum digging capability and reach.
New products on the Jet Materials stand will include: a Matest asphalt gyratory compactor with touch-screen technology; an advanced rebar locating system with scan cart and pin-point accuracy and built-in temperature compensation from James Instruments; a temperature-matched curing system for concrete applications; a GPS lightweight drop tester from Zorn Instruments; and an extra-large wheel tracker and slab compactor (combined unit) from IPC Global.
KVM International will be launching a new generation of drying drums for the asphalt industry, featuring their patented ‘4 point temperature measuring system’ where the temperature development of the drying process through the drum can be monitored. The company’s latest drying drums allow up to 50% RAP to be added, giving a high-quality dried mixture of virgin aggregates and RAP at a constant temperature during its discharge from the drying drum.
Responding to customer demand for switch disconnectors in high-visibility enclosures, Kraus & Naimer will be showing their latest Blue Line switch units. The new switch disconnectors are now available in 3-, 4-, 6-, 9-, and 12-pole versions (rated from 20-315amps), and have red-painted steel enclosures making them very easy to see, particularly in dusty environments. Other design features include: an earth terminal and lid bonding link; and a red/yellow padlockable handle with an interlock to prevent opening of the enclosure when the switch is in the ‘on’ position.
Liquid Management Solutions will be exhibiting two new online fuel-management software systems designed specially for arduous quarry applications. Cactus is an online terminal provided in 230V or 12/24V for mobile bowser applications, giving operators a complete fuel-management picture in real time. With reported incidents of fuel theft on the rise, Eagle Eye is an online tank gauging solution developed to tackle this growing problem by providing customers with 24/7 visibility of fuel stock.
Two new machines will be making their UK debuts on the Liebherr stand. With an operating weight of approximately 44 tonnes, the R 950 SME excavator is positioned between the standard version of the R 946 and the next larger model, the R 956 – both of which are also newly developed models complying with Stage IIIB/Tier 4i exhaust emission standards. The R 950 SME has been developed specifically to increase productivity in tough quarrying applications; the ‘SME’ acronym stands for ‘Super Mass Excavation’. Liebherr’s new Mobilmix 2.5 mixing plant is a container-mounted system primarily intended for mobile use on large construction sites and civil engineering projects. It has a maximum output of 110m3/h of compacted concrete and features an integral DW 2.5 twin-shaft mixer from the company’s successful range of mixing equipment.
In addition to presenting their new quarry planning software package, Vulcan Quarry Modeller, global technology company Maptek will be introducing the latest developments in 3D laser scanning, including information about the new, highly accurate and easy-to-use Maptek I-Site 8800 long-range laser scanning solution for the extractive industries.
This year’s show will see bulk materials handling specialists Martin Engineering Ltd displaying new products from the Cougar family of vibratory motors. The Cougar brand was incorporated into Martin last year and their 12V truck vibratory motors are expected to be a popular addition, helping truck drivers and haulage companies increase productivity with difficult bulk material loads.
Celebrating their 40th anniversary this year, Marubeni-Komatsu Ltd will be showing the new Komatsu HD785-7 rigid dumptruck as well as a range of brand new Stage IIIB-compliant models including the D65-17 dozer, HM400-3 articulated dumptruck and PC490LCD-10 excavator. A Stage IIIB engine and DPF (diesel particulate filter) will also be displayed on the company’s stand.
Northern Ireland-based Maximus Crushing & Screening will be officially launching two new machines at this year’s show – the Maximus 409 and the Maximus 522T. The Maximus 409 is a small, twin-deck, three-way-split scalping machine developed for users requiring versatility and ease of transport, while the Maximus 522T is a large triple-deck screener designed for medium- to large-scale operators requiring high-capacity and high-specification aggregate screening capabilities.
Metso Minerals (UK) Ltd will also be displaying several new products including the LT106 mobile jaw crusher, which has been designed around the well-proven C106 jaw, and the LT120 mobile jaw crusher, which incorporates the latest member of the C-jaw product range, the C120. This heavy-duty crusher is well suited to demanding stationary applications as well as mobile and portable operations. Also on display will be the company’s new HP3 high-density cone crusher.
Miller UK Ltd will be demonstrating their latest product innovation, the CASS system, which is designed to work in conjunction with the company’s PowerLatch quick-coupler to alert ground workers when a machine operators is releasing an attachment. The system provides additional peace of mind for site workers and management alike with its LED warning light and audible ‘Stand Clear’ message.
Of particular interest on the Mineral Products Association stand this year will be the Safer by Competence range of initiatives which are aimed at helping members achieve a fully competent workforce focused on delivering ‘zero harm’. Also, the MPA will be using the show to launch its new initiative, Safer by Partnership, which is specifically aimed at reducing contractor injuries and ill health.
Hillhead 2012 will see the launch of three new products from mobile plant control system specialists MOBA Mobile Automation Ltd. The MCA-2000 roller system helps drivers, operators and managers of asphalt and earthworks rollers ensure true and accurate pass control and recording; the MDS-2000 is a simple-to-use drilling control system designed to increase the accuracy of hole placement while optimizing the storage and transmission of all relevant data; and the entry-level Easy Dig system is said to be the simplest and easiest to use 2D excavator driver assistant, providing improved workflow and safety for operators.
New Holland Construction will be showing and demonstrating several of their latest C-Series machines featuring selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology to meet Tier 4 Interim emissions standards. Among them will be the 21-tonne EC215C and 35-tonne EC385C crawler excavators, and the W190C, W270C and W300C wheel loaders. Also on show will be the recently launched New Holland L225 skid-steer loader and two of the latest Iveco vehicles for the construction business.
OnGrade Ltd will be promoting their Site Zone proximity warning system and OnGarde rapid-deployment CCTV tower. Site Zone uses RFID technology to produce a 360° detection zone around a vehicle and alerts the driver when anyone wearing a Site Zone transponder enters this zone, while the tamper-proof OnGarde CCTV tower offers a cost-effective and efficient solution to site security needs.
Optibelt UK Ltd will be exhibiting their new third-generation, maintenance-free, energy-efficient Red Power 3 drive belts, which are increasingly being specified by operators of belt-driven machinery such as crushers and screens, due to their ability to reduce costs and improve productivity. Efficiencies of 97% can be achieved with Red Power 3 and the belts are available in all standard ‘V’ profiles, including SPA, SPB, SPC and 8V.
Sharing a stand with sister company Phoenix Transworld, Parker Plant Ltd will be exhibiting the latest in a series of product launches that have taken place since Hillhead 2010. Taking centre stage will be two completely new highly mobile concrete batching plants: the ConStar 750 containerized unit with a capacity of 30m3/h; and the semi-trailer ConStar 1500 with its on-board cement silos and a capacity of up to 50m3/h. In addition, further extending the company’s range of tracked crushing and screening machines will be the SR165 scalping screen and the JR1165 crusher, both aimed specifically at the recycling market, and the 1312 impact crusher and GC1200 high-speed cone crusher, both of which are well suited to the quarry environment.
Aqua-Trak, the latest innovative product from Pneutrol International, will be officially launched at Hillhead 2012. This new system provides the ready-mixed concrete producer with traceability, truck tracking, water monitoring and data flow in real time, thereby allowing immediate corrective action when necessary. Also on display will be the company’s Dynamix control system and next generation of wireless batching systems.
Portafill International Ltd will be using the show to launch their new range of compact crushers, including the Portafill 7000IC impact crusher. Easily transported around site and between jobs, and capable of crushing concrete, asphalt, bricks and rubble, the machine has been designed with the needs of contractors and recyclers in mind.
Power System Services Ltd will be showing a working model of the Airconveyor, which is suitable for use with cement, mortar, limestone, gypsum, fly ash and biomass materials. The revolutionary system is said to reduce power consumption, friction, belt wear and maintenance, and allows steeper angles of inclination.
Practicon Ltd will be showing their latest C-PAK+ concrete batching package operating on a Windows 7 platform. Key features include greater flexibility in controlling different types of concrete plant (ready-mixed and precast), extended management reporting, universal interface communications and an off-line package for production monitoring, ordering and invoicing, and/or for quality monitoring and control.
Weighing specialists Precia-Molen (UK) Ltd will be launching a new driver console, the BI700, which is said to represent a new dimension in driver-operated systems. The industrial PC-based terminal has a range of features including a large touch screen which can be easily programmed through a range of icons to guide the driver through the weighing transaction. The system includes a range of communication protocols as standard.
First-time exhibitors at Hillhead, Probst Handling Equipment will be showing their range of materials-handling equipment for lifting concrete construction products, including vacuum devices for lifting slabs and kerbs, and mechanical grabs capable of lifting either individual items or complete packs of slabs/blocks.
Prolec Ltd say this year’s show could not have been timed better for the introduction of their new Prolec Machine Engine (PME) modular safety product range. Within PME, core software processes input sensor data to determine a machine’s exact position and control parameters in real time, delivering safety and productivity solutions ranging from lifting and height safety to machine digging monitoring.
Exhibiting alongside parent company ConSpare, ProSpare will be showing the latest additions to their already extensive range of Hawiflex wear-resistant polyurethane products, including their new, easy-to-handle Hawiflex wear tiles and Hawipair ‘on-site’ liquid polyurethane. The company will also be showcasing its new range of Matrox high-performance polyethylene wear liners, which combine high wear resistance with ultra-low friction to keep products moving.
Making their debut appearance at Hillhead, Finnish firm Ramtec will be exhibiting the Robi Multimaster MM104 screening bucket, the Robi CG35R demolition grapple and the Robi EH170 hydraulic hammer.
Smiley Monroe Ltd, manufacturers of endless conveyor belts for the mobile crushing, screening and recycling sector, will be launching a series of new products including: a new polyurethane conveyor belt cleaner, new ‘Belt Buddy’ rapid repair kit for rubber conveyor belts, new range of vulcanizing tools and materials; and new impact-resistant polyurethane skirting.
According to Spillard Safety Systems Ltd, who have been providing total safety solution packages to the quarrying and mining industries for two decades, Hillhead 2012 will see the launch of the most technically advanced vision system ever produced for the off-road environment. The surround-view system is fully customizable with regard to application, machine or environment, and is capable of processing images from horizon to horizon.
Appearing for the first time at Hillhead, US firm Stonemont Solutions Inc. will be demonstrating their quality-control, plant-flow modelling and mix-design software for the construction materials industry. Used at more than 2,000 plants in the US, Canada and the UK, the company’s user friendly integrated software products include aggQC, asphaltQC, concreteQC, crusherQC and PlantFlow.
Takeuchi Mfg (UK) Ltd will also be making their debut appearance at the show. The Japanese mini-excavator specialists offer a range of machines from 1 to 14 tonnes and will exhibit a number of new models and attachments at the event, including the 8.5-tonne TB285, which has just arrived in the UK to replace the popular TB175 model. Another highlight on the stand will be the largest excavator in the company’s range, the high-specification, 14-tonne TB1140, while attachments on display will include Takeuchi’s new range of super-silent breakers.
Another new exhibitor is Talleres Nunez S.A., Spain’s leading manufacturer of screening media for the mining and quarrying industry. With a growing presence in the rest of Europe as well as the US and Africa, the company’s extensive product range includes woven wire mesh, anti-clogging meshes, polyurethane screens, rubber screens, perforated plate screens and various related accessories.
Regular exhibitors Tesab will be launching their new 1200TC tracked mobile cone crusher at Hillhead 2012. The 1,200mm diameter cone crusher is a well proven design having established itself in static applications in Scandinavia and Australasia. It features a large opening that can accept up to 250mm feed size and has a high reduction ratio of up to 16:1. Applications include hard rock quarrying and concrete recycling.
Having previously launched the 9-tonne Powerswivel at Hillhead 2010, long-standing exhibitors Thwaites Ltd have decided to reveal the newest addition to their site dumper range at this year’s show – the 2-tonne Hi-Swivel. According to the company, this new machine incorporates all the familiar Thwaites attributes and offers a payload capacity that is ideally matched to excavators on restricted job sites where access may be an issue.
Vision Techniques (UK) Ltd, suppliers of vehicle safety equipment for the last 25 years, will be launching their latest innovative safety system – Overview. By utilizing four extremely wide-angle cameras placed around a vehicle, Overview provides a single composite picture that allows the driver to see all around the vehicle at a single glance, helping to reduce the potential safety issue of information overload that can sometimes arise with numerous mirrors, cameras and audible warning systems.
Volvo Group UK Ltd will be exhibiting representative models from their full range of Stage IIIB machines, including the debut appearance of the EC250D crawler excavator and the 30-tonne EC300D featuring a three-piece ultra-high demolition rig with a 21m reach and 2.5-tonne tool capacity. Representing the Volvo wheel loader range will be two new G-Series models, the L60G and the L220G, while elsewhere on the stand will be an A40F articulated dumptruck and representative models from the company’s utility equipment and road machinery line-up, including the new DD25 2.5-tonne double-tandem asphalt roller.
Making their first appearance at Hillhead, Weir Minerals Europe Ltd, specialists in delivering and supporting slurry and dewatering equipment solutions for the global mining and aggregates industries, will be exhibiting a comprehensive range of products including: slurry pumps and submersible pumps from Warman; sizing screens and dewatering screens, hoses and bends, and rubber sheet from Linatex; Cavex hydrocyclones; Isogate knife gate and pinch valves; Gemex belt transmission systems; and Vulco mill linings.
Wirtgen Ltd will once again be exhibiting an extensive range of road and mineral technology products from the Wirtgen Group. New ‘I’ class Tier 4 Wirtgen planers will be on show for the first time along with new Hamm compactors and rollers. A range of the latest pavers from Vöglele will complete the road equipment display, while a Kleemann crusher will represent the Group’s Mineral Technology division.
Worsley Plant Ltd, specialists in carrier-mounted crushing and screening buckets, are returning to Hillhead with a product range expanded by the addition of a number of new products including three models from their brand new Rotar grab line-up, which are well suited to re-handling duties across a broad range of industry sectors.
