What’s New At Hillhead 2010?

In just over a month’s time, Tarmac’s Hillhead Quarry, near Buxton, Derbyshire, will once again come alive with the sights and sounds of the world’s biggest working quarry equipment demonstration show, which takes place from 22–24 June. Despite the effects of the recent recession, more than 400 UK and international suppliers of plant, equipment, materials and services will once again be in attendance, many of them using the show as a platform for the launch of their latest products and offerings. The following eight-page preview provides a brief glimpse of just some of the many new products, systems and services that visitors to the show will be able to see on display for the very first time.

ACE Plant return to Hillhead with two new products on display and demonstration. First is the company’s versatile new mobile dust-suppression unit, Dust Fighter, which features a powerful electric fan that projects a fine mist up to 60m. Key features include an integral generator, a 2,000-litre water reservoir and 360º oscillation and remote control functions. Also making its debut on the stand will be ACE Plant’s new communications tower developed for use on remote or sensitive sites, or for the supervision of lone workers. The all-in-one, self-contained unit provides tower lights, CCTV, a PA system and Wi-Fi capabilities.

AP Pavers will be exhibiting the Bomag BF 300C tracked paver, with a paving width of 1.7-3.4m (4.0m with extensions); and the Bomag BF 300P wheeled paver, with a paving width of 1.7-3.4m (4.0m with extensions), for the first time at Hillhead.

Aggregate Processing Solutions will be launching their APS-100AT washing system. Developed for use in the quarrying, recycling and remediation industries, key features of the washing plant include: a PLC control unit with an onboard control panel; a high-efficiency, extreme-duty linear multi-deck screen with Atri-Jet configuration to ensure complete cleanliness of the final product; a Trio coarse material washer; and 40% less water usage than current standard washing systems.

Hillhead 2010 will provide the European launch pad for a new motorized version of the Dodge torque-arm shaft-mounted speed reducer from Baldor. The Dodge Motorized Torque-Arm II (MTA) is a right-angle gearbox with an IEC-flanged motor interface, specified for use with two-pole or four-pole motors. A choice of 12 helical gear reduction ratios and three case sizes allows the unit to deliver a wide range of speed reductions with high efficiencies of up to around 95%.    

Once again Bell Equipment will be showcasing their latest ranges of mobile plant, including the E-series wheel loaders and the MkVI D-series articulated dumptrucks, while the UK arm of the company will announce the launch of Bell Assure – a package of combined products and services, designed to provide customers with flexibility of choice to allow them to run their fleet more efficiently.

Several new items of equipment will be exhibited by Benninghoven, including the RJOEG4-FU fuel-saving burner. Also on show will be the fully reconditioned type RJO4 burner, the latest control panels supplied by EMEX Control Systems and the company’s new user-friendly plant computer control system, which will be demonstrated on the stand.

Brendon Powerwashers will be launching the HWBBW30KLN+ES, one of four new hot-water, high-pressure, fully autonomous bowser washers available in trailer or skid-mounted versions. The HWBBW range is offered with maximum pressures of 238 bar or 340 bar and a flow rate of 12.5 litres/min. Engine options include Yanmar low-noise diesels and Honda petrol engines, including the iGX440 with automatic throttle control for quieter operation and reduced fuel consumption.

Britax PMG, specialists in vehicle safety equipment, will be introducing the new L14.100 series rear combination lamp, designed to provide an easy to fit, quality LED lighting solution on most types of construction machinery. The high-power LED modules offer amber, red, clear, green and blue options for reverse, seat-belt fitment and general warnings.

CGS Tyres UK (formerly Mitas UK Ltd) will be exhibiting their brand new Mitas earthmover (all steel) radial tyre range for the first time in the UK. The tyres feature a hexagonal bead for easy fitment, lower rolling resistance, deeper tread, superior driving comfort and higher traction.

Case will be exhibiting and demonstrating products from across their full product range, including several new machines on display for the first time, such as the CX210BMH excavator and the 410 and 440 models from their skid-steer loader line-up. The company will also be showing their latest wheel loaders, including the largest model in the Case range, the 1221E, in the demonstration area, as well as the 721EXT, 821EXR and 921E on static display.

A wide range of new products from ConSpare UK will be making their debut at Hillhead. Among the exhibits on the stand will be: a Teka TDZ 3000 twin-shaft mixer; a Walter high-pressure mixer washout system; a Hydroniz HydoMix VII sensor; a Hawiflex truckmixer loading system; BFM-fitting dust-tight weigh hopper connection; a HopperFix weigh hopper vent; and ExtraChrome mixer wear plates.

On the Cummins stand will be a new range of engines developed to meet the Tier 4 Interim emissions standards. On display for the first time in the UK will be the QSB 6.7, QSL 9, QSX 11.9 and QSX 15 Tier 4 Interim engines.

First-time exhibitors DeWALT will be using Hillhead 2010 as a platform for the launch of their latest products, including a new line of low-vibration SDS-max hammers and, to complete their full low-vibration range, the introduction of their low-vibration 2kg SDS-Plus hammers.

Regular Hillhead exhibitors Dig A Crusher will be showing three representative models from their brand new Rotar grab line-up  specifically designed for rehandling duties across a broad range of industry sectors.

Dust-monitoring consultants DustScan will be showcasing their new DS100D, a combined dust settlement and directional dust-monitoring system that allows the mass and coverage of settled dust to be measured and helps assess where the dust has come from. The company will also be promoting geochemical dust fingerprinting and mapping services, along with new microscopic detection methods to support forensic investigations of industrial dust.

Earthmover Tyres will be exhibiting, for the time in the UK, the Tire Monitor System, a wireless tyre pressure gauge and monitoring system developed for large off-road vehicles. Designed and supplied by AM Bromley, a company formed in 1997 by engineers who worked on the early concepts of tyre pressure monitoring systems, TMS provides tyre pressure and temperature data to allow tyres to be maintained for optimal performance, reducing downtime and increasing productivity.

Endecotts will be showing the latest addition to their range of sieve shakers, the D450, which will be on display together with the air sizer and new high-performance SW200 digital shaker. 

Euroflo Fluid Handling will be exhibiting the newly released Bravo range of heavy-duty slurry pumps from Grindex. These units range in size from 4.7kW up to 70kW and have wear parts manufactured in 26% chrome iron for maximum wear resistance. Another new product making its debut at the show will be the Grindex Master SH pump, which is capable of lifting up to 80m.

As usual, Flexco will be exhibiting a comprehensive range of productivity enhancing equipment for belt conveyors. New products on show will include: DRX impact beds; Flexco BR rivet solid plate system; electric belt cutter; and Flex-Lag Weld-On rubber pulley lagging. The DRX impact beds have been designed to deliver maximum protection to a conveyor belt, featuring ‘exclusive velocity reduction technology’ to reduce reaction forces and ‘slide-out service’ for fast, safe maintenance. The BR rivet solid plate system is recommended for the most demanding high-tension applications in limestone, crushed rock, sand and gravel, hard rock mining and cement.

With sustainability now a key issue for the quarrying industry, Fuchs Lubricants will be introducing an environmentally friendly lubricant pack – Bag in Box. The new product comes in a 100% recyclable outer case and with 75% less plastic to dispose of (compared to rigid plastic packaging), significantly reduces disposal costs. It also features a highly efficient container with a collapsing inner bag ensuring complete emptying without air ingress.

As well as exhibiting their range of high-quality bunded fuel-storage equipment, Fuel Proof will be showing a new line of pressure-washer bowsers. Also on display will be the company’s new range of bulk storage tanks with high-flow dispensing systems, suitable for large construction and haulage fleets where time and efficiency are key.

Taking centre stage on the Hazemag stand will be the new AP-KV sand impactor, designed to produce high-quality, uniformly sized sand and chippings at capacities up to 120 tonnes/h. A key feature of the AP-KV is the reversible rotor, which allows rotation direction to be changed to ensure that blow-bar striking edges are fully utilized (rotors can be supplied with either two or four blow bars). The completely redesigned impactor has four generously sized doors providing full access to internals, while blow bars are now inserted laterally to permit quick and easy turning or replacement, and impact aprons have a push-button hydraulic system.

Hosch, the specialist conveyor belt cleaning company, will be introducing their newly designed type HD head pulley scraper. Easily installed in the ‘3 o’clock position’ on any kind of discharge or head pulley, the device is suitable for even the most difficult of bulk materials and can be used on belts with mechanical splices. The system is said to be almost maintenance free, thanks to the tungsten carbide tipped cleaning blades, which provide highly efficient cleaning and long life, with no adjustment required until the blades have worn.

Responding to customer demand for more powerful machines, Invicta Vibrators will be showcasing their new BL80-230/6 rotary electric vibrator. This completely new designed six-pole vibrator, rated at 12.5kW (23,000kgf) output, is the largest ever manufactured by the company. Designs currently available in the BL80 range include the four-pole BL80-200/4 and the six-pole BL80-205/6 models.

At the time of writing, details of the JCB machinery line-up for Hillhead 2010 were being kept under wraps, but the company recently confirmed that it would be ‘doubling’ its stand space in order to showcase an even wider array of new and improved machines. Further details will be posted on the Hillhead 2010 website as they become available.

JR Technical Services (JRTS) will be exhibiting two new non-nuclear density meters (from TransTech Systems Inc) for asphalt and engineered soils. The latest PQI 380 model for asphalt advances the current technology to a level that will allow the user to work in wet conditions and use the gauge on existing asphalt surfaces, while the SDG 200 for engineered soils incorporates advances in electro-magnetic impedance technology and uses a touch-screen interface. There will be a demonstration area at the show for customers to use the gauges.

Hillhead 2010 will see KVM International display their new energy-saving ‘green’ production system. The system consists of four temperature probes fitted in the drying drum that send signals, via a wireless transmitter, to a receiver. The receiver then transmits a signal to the control system where four displays show the temperature of each probe. By combining several process parameters with these temperatures, it is possible to regulate the burner at an optimum level, reducing energy consumption and eliminating waste. 

Kayasand will be promoting their range of processing equipment, all of which is new to the European market. The V7 dry sand-manufacturing plant, for example, reprocesses surplus crusher dust to make a consistent, evenly graded, well shaped sand with a tight control over the filler content. Meanwhile, the RC7, a derivation of the V7 plant, is designed to reprocesses crushed concrete. Concrete is re-crushed three times through the plant to make both coarse and fine aggregates capable of being re-used in high-strength concrete.

Among the exhibits on the Kubota stand will be the new reduced-tail-swing and tight-tail-swing excavators in the 4-6-tonnes class, featuring larger deluxe cabins, a new direct-injection engine, auto idling and auto travel shift.

Making its debut on the M G Industries stand will be the Cen-Trax conveyor tracker system, which works on both single- and bi-directional conveyors. The unit is constantly self-adjusting, has no external guide rollers and comes in two versions for both the top and return strands of the conveyor. Also new from the company will be the Spill-Ex skirting system, which uses individual rubber segments and is easy to adjust in excessive wear areas without the need to change the full length.

New products on the Martin Engineering stand will include the company’s Multiport range of air cannons, which have been designed to simplify the installation and maintenance of air blasters by having a central air receiver that diverts the flow of high-force air through multiple discharge nozzles.

Maximus Crushing & Screening will be launching the Maximus 516, a heavy-duty, high-capacity scalper capable of screening a wide variety of material in the harshest conditions. Powered by a Tier 129hp III-compliant Cat C4.4 engine, the Maximus 516 is equipped with a heavy-duty hopper, 8m3 feeder, 16ft x 5ft screenbox, 1.6m wide tail conveyor and hydraulically operated folding side conveyors. Also on display will be the Maximus 512 tracked screen, designed for use in the aggregates and recycling industries. Powered by a 100hp Tier III Cat C4.4 engine, the machine is equipped with a 12ft x 5ft high-powered, heavy-duty, two-bearing screenbox. The unit can be fed by wheel loader, excavator or directly from a crusher circuit, thanks to its optional crusher chute.

Measurement Devices Ltd (MDL), specialists in laser measurement technology and positioning/navigation systems, will be showcasing their latest Dynascan system – the first of a new generation of portable and affordable Lidar systems. The unit weighs less than 25 lbs and can be easily mounted on a vehicle.

Metso Minerals will be presenting their newly developed track-mounted Lokotrack LT110C primary crusher. Powered by a low-emission 310kW Cat C13 engine and weighing 58 tonnes, the compact machine is built around the proven Nordberg C10 jaw crusher, which has a feed opening of 1,100mm x 850mm. Depending on the feed system selected, the LT110C can be equipped with a standard 6m3 feed hopper or an optional 9m3 version. Metso’s IC500 intelligent control system is fitted as standard on the LT110C. The compact machine measures 15.6m in length, 3.0m in width and 3.85m in height for ease of transportation between sites.

Batch-heater specialists Mixlance will be showing their newly developed igniter assembly for conical-flame burners. The device provides optimum power usage and enhanced environmental impact by providing ignition on demand. Also on show will be a 5-tonne batch-heater barrel which incorporates a ‘hibernation mode’ and other ‘save initiatives’. Forming part of the company’s ‘optimization package’, the specially redesigned barrel reduces noise, fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, resulting in cost savings and less environmental impact.  

New to the UK market will be the Landfill Grade system from OnGrade. The system has been developed to improve the efficiency of landfill sites by optimizing compaction levels and providing real-time information for site managers. 

World renowned mixing technology specialists Eirich will be exhibiting their new R16 intensive pan mixer for the first time in the UK on the Orthos (Engineering) stand. The rotating R-series pan mixer, which is simpler in design compared with the older D-series mixer that is widely used in the concrete industry, has a 500–750-litre capacity (88–1,200kg) and meets the demand for short mixing times, low energy consumption, high mix quality, batch repeatability and reduced maintenance.

Pioneer Pump, who offer one of the largest ranges of quarry and mining pumps with flow capabilities beyond 4,000m3/h (16,000 gal/min) and pressures in excess of 20 bar (750ft), will be launching a new eco-friendly range of sound-attenuated pumpsets, the 100SL and 150SL, as well as their latest 4X3 and 6X4 extreme-pressure pumpsets. 

Portafill International will be exhibiting their latest 5000CT screening machine, developed for easy and cost-efficient transport, yet robust enough to withstand abrasive materials.

Among the line-up of machines on the Powerscreen stand will be a number of new and recently launched products, including the Warrior 2400, Pegson XA750, Pegson 1500 Maxtrak, Mobile Wash Recycle Plant, Warrior 800, Pegson XH500 and Pegson XH320.

Pneutrol Ireland will be displaying their versatile and efficient Dynamix range of batching plant control systems. This newly launched system has been developed to connect up to 20 users simultaneously, with the ability to view batching information, production reports, stock inventory, recipe information etc, without interfering with the batching process.

New for Hillhead 2010 from weighing specialists Precia-Molen will be the BI400 touch-screen driver weighbridge terminal and ANPR system, which provides a comprehensive method of monitoring and controlling site access with accurate vehicle identification. The company will also be launching a new range of dynamic weighing equipment, including the BT lorry/train loading scale, which has the ability to connect to management systems and is Board of Trade approved for vehicle loading.

Co-exhibiting with parent company ConSpare, first-time exhibitors ProSpare will be launching their new EasiFix abrasion-resistant lining, which cushions impacts and is quick, safe and inexpensive to install.   

Pulsar Measuring Systems will be showing for the first time at Hillhead the TruPulse 360B hand-held laser rangefinder from Laser Technology Inc (LTI). The device features an integrated digital inclinometer and compass using LTI’s exclusive TruVector compass technology. This allows the unit to be tilted, rolled or even used upside down while measuring the correct azimuth and inclination of an object. It can also be used to measure the inclination of dry, straight blastholes with a tape and torch, or as a low-cost entry-level system for profiling.

To accompany their existing Rapidmix range of continuous mixing plants, Rapid International will be showing their new mobile batching plants – the Rapidbatch 70 and 120. The completely self-contained units offer cost-effective on-site batch mixing in remote locations, with production rates of 70m3 per hour and 120m3 per hour respectively.

RDS Technology will be exhibiting an extensive range of on-board weighing systems for wheel loaders, including the new-generation Loadlog 500+ for small loaders and skid-steers, which has benefited from software improvements.

RM Group will be demonstrating their latest fully automated trailer-mounted mobile packaging system. During the three show days, visitors will be able to view the system packing stone from the quarry into 25kg bags and 850kg IBC bulk bags.

The all-encompassing nature of the product offering from Sandvik will be reflected in their line-up of new equipment at Hillhead 2010. In action at the show will be the new QE440 tracked scalper, the DI550 down-the-hole drill rig and the BR3288 and BR4099 hydraulic breakers for quarrying applications. Also on show will be the new QI440 tracked impact crusher, QA331 tracked screener, BA2323 Basic Line breaker and the BR111/222/333 compact breaker range. 

Scandura-PPL will be showing a comprehensive range of polyurethane screening media and abrasion-resistant mouldings including, for the first time, their no-weld conversion system, which is designed to fit a specific screen deck media and can be used with the company’s Module 600 and Scan 85 systems. 

Scania will be highlighting their new EU Stage IIIB and US Tier 4i emission standards-compliant industrial engine range. Based on the company’s proven 9-, 13- and 16-litre power units, the latest range features the Scania Engine Management System, XPI (extra-high-pressure injection) and SCR (selective catalytic reduction). The 9-litre engine has a power output ranging from 202–294kW (275–400hp), while the 13-litre unit has an output from 257–368kW (350–500hp) and the 16-litre engine has an output between 404–515kW (550–700hp).

Spillard Safety Systems, who have been providing mobile plant safety solutions to the quarrying industry for over 17 years, will be launching their new range of Safe Step retractable personnel access systems, which will be installed and demonstrated on an excavator. Also making its debut will be the new VCAS360, which Spillard describe as the most technologically advanced 360° proximity detection system available.

Stelex Construction Equipment, manufacturers of the Hercules range of heavy-duty trommels, will be launching their latest road-going trommel. Designed for quick and east set up on site, the HT182M features a 42-tonne capacity feed hopper and a 1.8m diameter x 9.8m long barrel, and has a capacity of up to 500 tonnes/h.

The new KAB 600 series of high-performance seats will be on display on the TEK Seating stand. Available in a two-tone orange and grey fabric, the 600-series seats feature a modular design to allow interchangeability with air or mechanical suspensions, providing high levels of comfort and safety for operators of construction vehicles.  

Tema Machinery will be exhibiting a wide selection of machinery, including their new mobile Liwell screening unit. Developed in Germany more than 40 years ago, Liwell technology offers effective screening of sticky, moist and abrasive materials. The new mobile concept incorporates a hopper, a single screen and a hinged stockpile conveyor, which can be folded for transport.

Terex Finlay will be displaying no fewer than 10 tracked mobile crushing, screening and washing machines at this year’s show. Among them will be the brand new J-1480 jaw crusher and the C-1550 cone crusher. Both of these machines will be working in the demonstration area and on static display on the Terex Finlay stand.

At this year’s show Tesab will be exhibiting their new 20ft x 5ft triple-deck tracked screen and their new closed-circuit asphalt recycling impactor, which has the ability to produce a single-size product from one machine. Also on show will be the company’s newly improved 10570 jaw crusher and 1412T belt-fed impactor, both of which will be in action in the demonstration area.

3G Software & Measurement will be exhibiting a new version of their BlastMetriX3D face survey system. This latest version has been developed to work with complex shapes such as corners and larger blast sites, which require multiple imaging locations. The monitoring unit can be also expanded to work as a geological mapping tool, allowing measurements from several down-the-hole probes, as well as GPS data, to be imported.

The 9-tonne Powerswivel dumper, designed to perform safely and efficiently in difficult site conditions, will be exhibited by Thwaites. Powered by a 111hp Stage 3a Perkins turbocharged and after-cooled engine that produces 418Nm of torque, the machine features a newly designed chassis offering excellent all-round visibility for the operator, while its extended wheelbase provides increased stability. Thwaites will also be promoting their smallest product to date – the Micro 300 compact dumper – which will be shown in standard form as well as with optional floatation wheels and skip extensions. 

Topcon will be showcasing their latest range of machine control products and solutions for the construction market, including a new state-of-the-art hardware platform for business owners and project supervisors and the latest-generation 3DMC2 system, which utilizes inertial and gyroscope technology to allow fine grading down to millimetre-level accuracy with unprecedented speed.

Concrete equipment specialists Utranazz will be using the show to launch their versatile mobile volumetric concrete mixer (MVBP). The Hydromix MVBP features a special ‘roll-on roll-off’ system that provides multiple mounting options. The unit works completely autonomously and is equipped with its own engine, hydraulic pumps, water-system and loading/off-loading legs. It utilizes a highly accurate computer-controlled weighing system to produce accurate concrete mixes, allowing the user to achieve QSRMC accreditation.

New for Hillhead 2010 will be the Nivobob 4000 plumb-bob system, which has been developed specifically for the quarrying and cement industries. According to its manufacturers, point and continuous level control instrument specialists UWT (UK), the unit is easy to install and has been designed to operate as a high-quality, low-cost continuous level monitoring system with reduced maintenance.  

Volvo Construction Equipment will be taking a larger stand than usual to showcase their construction equipment and road machinery, some of which will be on display for the first time in the UK. Taking centre stage on the stand will be the AGB6870 paver, the new MW500 milling machine and the latest SD130 soil compaction roller. Also featured will be the DD24 asphalt roller and Volvo Truck products. The benefits of the company’s recently launched Eco Operator initiative will also feature heavily, with visitors to the stand invited to take the ‘Eco Challenge’.

Visitors to the Weightron Bilanciai stand will be able to see how the company’ enhanced Winweigh IV software and peripheral control equipment can bring significant improvements to data collection and management, site security and logistics. Also on show will be Weightron’s new industrial PC-based Diade driver-operated terminal which, in conjunction with robust touch-screen technology, provides optimum user flexibility and versatility.

Wirtgen will also be taking a larger stand to showcase a range of new equipment from the Group. New to the UK and offering the latest in milling technology will be the Wirtgen W210 road planer with its unique twin-engine concept. Other new machines will include the 9-tonne Hamm HD90+ tandem roller with XXL cab, the Hamm GRW 280 pneumatic-tyred roller and Hamm’s newly developed range of small tandems. New equipment from Vögele will include the1803-2 paver as well as smaller tracked/wheeled units, while the new Kleemann MC110Z jaw crusher will complete the line-up on the Wirtgen stand.
