Volvo launch mid-range E-series wheel loaders

Volvo Construction Equipment have completed their E-Series wheel loader line-up with the launch of four new models — the L60E, L70E, L90E and L110E. These latest machines, together with the L120E which was launched at last year’s ConExpo exhibition, make up Volvo’s mid-range wheel loader line (100–224hp), a product group that accounts for around 75% of the company’s wheel loader sales.

The L60E and L110E are completely new models developed specifically for the E-Series range, while the L70E and L90E are upgraded and improved models from the previous D-Series line-up. All four machines are described by Volvo as true ‘all-rounders’ with the performance, economy and flexibility needed to take on a variety of construction, industrial and agricultural applications.

The loaders are powered by high-performance, electronically controlled, low-emission engines which provide reduced fuel consumption and lower operating costs, while an improved Automatic Power Shift (APS) gear-selector system lets the operator choose between four different shifting modes, allowing the loader to be adapted to a wide range of working conditions.

The L60E, L70E and L90E are powered by Volvo’s new 6-litre D6D diesel engine, while the L110E is equipped with the 7-litre Volvo D7D engine, a variation of the engine used in the L120E. Both engines meet EPA Tier 2 and EU step II emissions requirements while still producing high torque at low rev/min. The turbocharged engines have an air-to-air intercooler and hydraulically driven, electronically controlled fan which only works when there is a need for cooling, thereby minimizing the demand for fuel. According to Volvo, the new machines offer up to 20% greater fuel efficiency than their D-Series predecessors.

In addition, Volvo say their in-house-developed countershaft transmission offers the smoothest shifting possible. The operator simply selects forward, reverse or kickdown and the APS selects the correct gear according to engine rev/min, travel speed and the chosen shift program.

All of the new loaders feature an intelligent load-sensing hydraulic system and Volvo’s patented Torque Parallel Linkage, which combines high breakout torque with effective parallel action throughout the entire lifting range. A cast steel hydraulic attachment bracket together with a wide range of attachments further increases the machines’ versatility.

Axles on the new machines have been developed, adapted and integrated into the total drivetrain design to provide optimum rimpull. In addition, the loader frames have been redesigned using high-strength steel to make component mounting more secure and to increase the service life of the machines.

Contronic, Volvo’s well proven control and monitoring system, is now available in eight new languages on the E-Series machines, bringing the total to 13. The system comprises an electronic network made up of three computers which continuously monitor the various machine functions. If a potential problem arises, the system immediately issues a warning to the operator. All the operating data is saved and can be used to analyse the performance of the loader, allowing the customer to trace its history since its last service. The machine’s functions can also be updated and adapted according to the operating conditions via the Contronic service display.

The E-Series wheel loaders are equipped with Volvo’s Care Cab, which provides a comfortable and safe environment for the operator. All incoming air is filtered in two stages for maximum cleanliness and even the re-circulated air is filtered. The efficiency of the air-conditioning system provides a comfortable cab temperature all year round, while also functioning as an air dryer.

The Care Cab is also equipped with an adjustable steering wheel, seat, armrests and hydraulic level console to maximize the operator’s degree of comfort. Large windows and narrow pillars offer optimum all-round visibility, while a newly designed engine hood improves the operator’s view to the rear. Noise insulation has also been improved, making the Care Cab one of the quietest on the market. A sloped ladder offers easy access to the cab and all service platforms and steps feature new and improved anti-slip surfaces.

Daily inspection of service and maintenance points has been made easier through larger engine access panels that are raised and held open by gas struts, while an improved swing-up radiator grille and swing-out fan also facilitate easier serviceability. In addition, parts commonality has been greatly increased on the new machines for easier spares handling. For example, 84% of E-Series components are common to both the L70E and L90E, compared with only 43% on the equivalent D-Series machines.

Moreover, some 95% of materials used in the E-Series wheel loaders can be recycled. Components such as the engine, transmission and hydraulics are reconditioned and reused through an exchange programme, and the machine designers have also made it possible to use biodegradable oil in the hydraulic system.
