Worcestershire County Council seeking new quarries
Landowners and mineral operators invited to recommend new minerals sites in the county
WORCESTERSHIRE County Council is looking for new places for mineral extraction in the county.
A new call for sites for mineral extraction in Worcestershire will run from today (16 January) to 13 March 2020, with the council accepting suggestions for potential sites from landowners and mineral operators across the county.
The consultation will help with allocating specific sites and preferred areas for mineral extraction in the future.
Worcestershire CC is currently preparing a Mineral Site Allocations Development Plan Document that will allocate specific sites and preferred areas for mineral development, to support the delivery of its Minerals Local Plan and provide greater certainty about where mineral development will take place.
Councillor Ken Pollock, cabinet member with responsibility for economy and infrastructure at Worcestershire CC, said: ‘Mineral extraction in Worcestershire is important to be able to provide materials for building.
‘This consultation will feed into our Mineral Site Allocations Development Plan Document, which points to preferred areas in the county where quarries will be developed and minerals will be extracted.
‘The document supports our main Minerals Local Plan and will help us provide greater certainty about where mineral development will take place.’
To promote a site, the following information must be provided: Grid reference of the site; site boundary on an OS base; robust evidence of the quality, quantity and type of mineral resources; and evidence of landowner and operator support.
Details of the expected life of the site and an indication of when proposals are likely to come forward would also be useful.
Worcestershire CC says there will be an opportunity to comment on the draft Mineral Site Allocations Development Plan Document, including the proposed sites, once the sites have been assessed and the document has been drafted.
This is anticipated to be in late 2020 in line with timetable set out in the adopted Local Development Scheme.
