Volvo excavator for Les Taylor Group
Les Taylor Contractors Ltd, situated at Mintlaw, near Peterhead, Aberdeenshire, have added a new Volvo EC240C excavator to their piling division and equipped it with their own design of piling head for contracts nationwide.
The new machine has been supplied with standard backacter equipment and quick hitch from Volvo but has then undergone additional modifications undertaken by Les Taylor Contractors themselves. These include the fitting of an Indexator rototilt hitch and a hydraulically driven sheet piling head of the company’s own design and manufacture. The two-tonne head runs off the EC240C’s hammer shear circuit requiring up to 230 litres per minute in high mode and can handle sheet pile sections up to 14m in length at a reach of 7m. The selector block and solenoids for the rototilt have been repositioned and located within the superstructure of the machine, as opposed to the usual mounting point on the rototilt itself, to allow piling operations below or close to water. All the hose connections to the piling head and rototilt are fitted with quick-release couplings to facilitate quick and easy changeover to other attachments and buckets.
The EC240C is powered by a seven-litre Volvo Tier III low-emission engine developing 170hp (net). Coupled to the ‘Integrated work-mode control’ hydraulic system the machine can deliver high productivity, high digging capacity precision and fuel economy. Equipped with the standard 6.0m boom and 2.97m dipper arm the EC240C has a maximum ground reach of 10.26m and load over height of 6.8m, making it suitable for piling in restricted areas.
Les Taylor, plant director, commented: ‘We’ve had an extremely positive experience with our previous Volvo machines which have proved to be reliable and productive. We needed to replace a machine in our piling division so decided to choose the package offered once again by Volvo.’
