TBS complete new set of aggregate bins for Heidelberg Materials
Total Batching Solutions remove and replace old aggregate storage bins at ready-mixed concrete plant
TOTAL Batching Solutions (TBS) have delivered a new, high-specification aggregate bin upgrade at one of Heidelberg Materials’ ready-mixed concrete sites next to the river Thames in central London.
The project involved the complete removal and replacement of the plant’s existing aggregate storage bins, which were used to store marine aggregates and sands brought into the capital by barge and offloaded using a mobile material handler with grab.
Measuring 18.5m in length x 3.2m in width x 3.8m in height, with the top section flat packed, the new aggregate bins were transported to site by extendable low-loader.
TBS replaced the original bins with a fully galvanized structure to extend the life of the aggregate storage area. The new bins have a ‘live’ aggregate storage capacity of 55 tonnes, with 100% of the space now fully utilized with no material left in the bins when emptied. To ease material flow from the fines bins, hard-wearing, low-friction Tivar liners were fitted to the tapers.
Commenting on the project, TBS representative David Carlisle noted: ‘Many aggregate bins need replacement because the bin linings are worn through, yet the main bin structure is still structurally sound. We wanted to create a future-proof, more cost-effective solution where the customer can simply replace precise worn areas and not a complete set of bins.
‘Now, even if bins are not replaced at all over time, the customer has the option to change out both the base taper section and the wear liner on each individual bin section.’
Given its location in central London, it was important that the installation was carried out in as short a time as possible, to allow plant production to recommence. The TBS and Heidelberg Materials site teams worked long hours to ensure the original aggregate bins were removed and new bins installed ahead of schedule in just five days. The plant is now fully operational again and back to producing ready-mixed concrete for the local market.
