Tarmac launch eMixer Discovery Programme
Innovative programme aims to accelerate the construction sector’s shift to zero emissions
TARMAC have announced the launch of their eMixer Discovery Programme, introducing five electric vehicles to their fleet, in a significant step towards a more sustainable construction industry. Developed in partnership with Renault Trucks and McPhee Mixers, part of TVS Interfleet, this initiative demonstrates Tarmac’s commitment to driving innovation as the sector moves towards zero-emission targets.
The eMixer Discovery programme forms a key part of Tarmac’s long-term strategy to transition to a fully electric fleet, aiming to reduce carbon emissions and promote sustainable practices across their operations. It builds on the company’s pioneering work in 2022, when it introduced the first fully electric concrete mixer in the UK. This groundbreaking project, a result of Tarmac’s supplier innovation challenge in partnership with Renault Trucks and TVS Interfleet, invited suppliers to present cutting-edge solutions, culminating in the launch of Tarmac’s first electric mixer, funded by CRH’s innovation fund.
Following its initial success, Tarmac are introducing five additional electric mixers, further solidifying their position as an industry leader in sustainable logistics practices.
The new electric concrete mixers will play a crucial role in helping Tarmac’s suppliers transition to electric vehicles by offering a low-risk opportunity to experience first-hand the benefits of electrification in real-word application. Through this programme, supply chain partners can lease an electric truck for a six-month period, allowing them to evaluate the vehicle’s performance in their operation before committing to a long-term investment.
Ben Garner, head of logistics at Tarmac, commented: ‘Tarmac are leading the way in sustainable innovation within the construction industry. The launch of our eMixer Programme is an exciting step towards making the shift to zero-emission vehicles smoother and more accessible for our suppliers. Our ‘try before you buy’ model allows our partners to de-risk their initial transition to electrification.
‘Our approach ensures we lead by example, making meaningful contributions to reducing carbon emissions, reducing urban noise, and improving air quality. While others may make promises, we’re delivering real, tangible progress that contributes to our Net Zero strategy and benefits our customers.’
In addition to showcasing leadership in sustainability, Tarmac’s collaboration with Renault Trucks highlights their focus on forming strong partnerships that drive progress.
Roger Clarke, Renault Trucks UK and Ireland’s head of electromobility and customer advanced solutions, said: ‘We are delighted to support Tarmac’s pioneering drive towards sustainability as they offer their contractors the opportunity to trial electric mixers in real-world operation through the eMixer Discovery Programme.
‘The expansion of their electric concrete mixer fleet not only accelerates the adoption of zero-emission transport solutions but also sets a benchmark for the construction industry, driving progress across the sector.
‘At Renault Trucks we are proud to lead the way in providing low-carbon transport solutions that help make this progress possible and look forward to continuing our partnership with Tarmac to drive further advancements in their transition to a decarbonized fleet.’
Costin at Concrete Haulage Ltd, who are operating the first new electric mixer truck at Tarmac’s Kings Cross site, added: ‘At Concrete Haulage, we’re proud to be partnering with Tarmac to take a major step forward in sustainable transport. Operating this electric mixer is an exciting opportunity for us to work with Tarmac to build the future of transport in our sector in a way that works for our drivers and our customers.’
