Ultra-efficient cooling for high-powered batteries
SPAL introduce new brushless high-voltage fans and coolant pumps for battery electric vehicles and equipment
AS the industry moves towards net-zero construction, the development of battery-electric power solutions has progressed rapidly, presenting challenges to thermal-management systems.
SPAL Automotive have responded by introducing two new brushless ranges which deliver effective cooling along with maximum energy efficiency, namely high-voltage (HV) fans and coolant pumps.
Developed for cooling in vehicles and equipment powered by high-capacity batteries, HV fans require less current to achieve the same power output as low-voltage fans and suffer lower energy loss. This makes them more energy-efficient while extending the range or the time the machine can function on a single charge.
Created to sit alongside SPAL cooling fans, the coolant pump is designed to deliver even greater efficiency to the battery thermal management systems of battery electric applications. This is achieved by controlling the flow of coolant and maintaining the battery at an optimal temperature, in turn protecting the battery and prolonging its life.
Additional features include variable-speed control, diagnostic functions, and an extended temperature range, to cope with the demands of heavy-duty vehicles operating in challenging environments, as well as serving the cooling needs of hydrogen and hydrogen fuel-cell-powered vehicles.

SPAL brushless technology contained within a fully sealed motor unit meets IP68 and IP6K9K specifications, keeps out dust, prevents water ingress, and is spark-free. With long-life operation of +40,000h, the fans and pumps can withstand ambient working temperatures of up to 120°C, meet stringent environmental requirements, and can operate effectively in harsh conditions while exceeding safety standards. Additional features such as soft reverse equip SPAL fans to cope with muddy settings, to enable the fan to clear debris from the radiator and maintain performance.
SPAL fans have applications in the wider construction arena for the intensive cooling requirements of both static battery electric storage system (BESS) units and mobile BESS units. Additionally, the charging units for battery electric vehicles and machinery, especially those designed for super-fast charging, need highly effective cooling to combat the increased heat generated.
