SunAggregates launch cutting-edge washing plant in Thetford
Company aiming to revolutionize waste management with high-quality recycled construction materials
SUNAGGREGATES, a division of the SunEnviro group, have announced the opening of their state-of-the-art aggregate washing plant in Thetford, Norfolk.
The innovative facility is set to transform construction waste by producing premium recycled aggregates that support sustainable building practices. It will divert an additional 40,000–50,000 tonnes of waste from landfills annually, promoting a circular economy and reducing environmental impact.
With a focus on quality and sustainability, the plant will supply recycled materials that meet BSE 9321 standards for strength and durability, making them suitable for a wide range of construction applications.
SunAggregates’ Thetford facility will produce:
Type 1 crushed concrete (63mm–dust): Ideal for road capping, providing a durable and cost-effective base layer
5mm recycled sharp grit (0–5mm): Perfect for screeding and landscaping, offering excellent compaction and a smooth finish
Recycled shingle (10mm, 20mm, and 40mm): Versatile material for drainage, soakaways, and pipe bedding, efficiently managing water
No fines crushed concrete (20–80mm): Sustainable option for drainage systems and soakaways, allowing free water flow to reduce flooding.
6F5 crushed concrete (125mm–dust): Suitable for sub-bases in road construction and piling mats, providing stability and strength.
The Thetford plant features McLanahan’s UltraSCRUB system, which uses high-frequency vibration to clean and separate hardcore waste. This advanced process ensures the materials meet stringent quality standards, while an innovative thickener unit recycles the majority of water used in production.
Highlighting the plant’s benefits, Mathew Stewart, managing director of SunAggregates, said: ‘We’re proud to offer builders and contractors sustainable, cost-effective materials that match the performance of quarried aggregates. By choosing recycled materials, businesses can reduce costs, lower their carbon footprint, and contribute to a greener future.’
SunAggregates is part of the SunEnviro group, which also includes SunSkips and SunDemolition. Together, the group manages more than 120,000 tonnes of waste annually across the East of England, with the new washing plant representing a pivotal step in the company’s mission to repurpose waste into valuable resources, making sustainability both practical and affordable.
