Severed human head found in quarry

Detectives investigating gruesome find at quarry and waste facility in Cambridgeshire

DETECTIVES have launched an investigation following the discovery of a severed human head at a quarry in Mepal, near Ely, Cambridgeshire. Officers were called to the site on Monday afternoon (May 16) after a worker at the quarry in Block Fen Drove made the gruesome discovery.

A post mortem examination of the head proved inconclusive, with specialists still unable to identify whether it belongs to a man or a woman. However, in a statement issued yesterday, the police said it was thought the person had died before 1 January 2015.

Detective Inspector Jerry Waite, from the Beds, Cambs and Herts Major Crime Unit, said: ‘We are conducting enquiries both locally and across the county borders. At this stage we do not know if the head is male or female, however we have got officers carrying out searches at a site in Mill Road, Sharnbrook, Bedfordshire, as we believe this is where the remains may have come from.’

Mick George Ltd, who operate an aggregates and waste business at the site in Mepal, said they were helping the police with their enquiries. It is understood the head arrived at the quarry in a skip load of construction waste before being discovered by one of the company’s workers.
