Fully electric Sandvik UJ443E jaw crusher meets the growing demands of aggregate production

SANDVIK showcased their new, fully electric UJ443E mobile jaw crusher during their 2025 Autumn roadshow in Finland, offering aggregate industry operators an excellent opportunity to witness the unit first-hand in real-life conditions and learn more about its advanced features. The roadshow was combined with field tests to verify the benefits.

According to Sandvik, the new fully electric UJ443E primary crushing unit promises a substantial productivity boost and improved sustainability for aggregate production. It offers advanced technology and features that will meet the changing needs of the future, with benefits that include improved mobility, easier maintenance and a more productive crushing process.

Sandvik’s field tests were carried out in co-operation with three Finnish customers interested in developing the productivity and sustainability of their aggregate operations. The aim of the demonstrations was to collect data on the operation, functionality and performance of the unit in real site conditions.

Three prominent aggregate producers – Swerock, Kamrock, and Maansiirto Veljekset Rinta – were chosen to participate in the roadshow. Their feedback was positive, and the insights gained were highly encouraging. The Sandvik UJ443E was widely regarded as a long-anticipated breakthrough that promises to transform the market for tracked crushing units.

The industry professionals were particularly interested in the fully electric track system, which offers 20% more traction power with no increase in the size or weight of the chassis. The new, more powerful chassis enables better mobility and agility even on tricky uphill terrains, while the electric motors provide immediate full-power torque and allow extremely accurate tramming movements, down to fractions of an inch if necessary. The tracks feature three speed settings, and even the lowest offers ample power for relocating the unit on site.

As Joni Kokko, who oversees Swerock’s equipment fleet, noted: ‘The UJ443E mobile jaw crusher with electrically powered tracks proved to be a powerful and precise solution in terms of usability. Unlike previous models, this jaw crusher is fully electric and sets the stage for a greener future.’

The UJ443E can be powered either by an onboard diesel generator or directly from the electrical grid. Electric drive delivers significant cost and productivity advantages: fuel consumption is reduced by up to 30% compared with previous models, resulting in a corresponding boost in productivity. Moreover, the required hydraulic oil volume drops to just 70 litres (less than 18.5 gal) – a reduction of up to 90% versus conventional systems – since the electric chassis eliminates the need for oil. Additional key benefits include longer intervals between maintenance and refuelling for the powertrain, as well as lower local emissions.

The jaw crusher at the heart of the unit is the reliable Sandvik CJ412 with a 1,200mm x 830mm (47in x 33in) feed opening. A major innovation is the Optik system at the feed station, which automatically relieves any blockages in the crusher by changing the crusher’s direction of rotation, rotation speed and jaw position. Crushers have conventionally been unblocked by running the jaws back and forth, which practically requires shutting down the machine. Thanks to the powerful main motor fitted with a frequency controller, unblocking has now been automated for uninterrupted operation, a benefit that received special praise from the customers involved in the field tests.

‘The UJ443E crusher combines several innovative solutions. It’s suitable for even the harshest conditions thanks to its robust design and durable technology. Electrification enables highly energy-efficient aggregate production, with significant emission-reduction potential for the entire crushing plant,’ said site manager Mikko Kaarlela from Kamrock.

The unit features the widest main conveyor available on the market, with a belt width of 1,400mm (55in), which greatly reduces wear on the feed box and enhances overall process efficiency. Its maximum discharge height of up to 4.7m (15ft 5in) allows for larger stockpiles, directly boosting productivity. With five hydraulically selectable discharge heights, the system minimizes wear on downstream equipment and reduces dust emissions by eliminating the need to drop material from excessive heights.

A key feature in terms of maintenance and operator safety is the feeder discharge end that can be lifted hydraulically, which makes it much easier to perform maintenance on the grizzly fines chute and to replace the stationary jaw of the crusher in a very tight space.

Another major maintainability and safety improvement is the possibility to lower the discharge conveyor to ground level. ‘The unit’s maintenance features are well designed and carefully executed. Maintenance can also be carried out on the main conveyor at ground level. Overall, the UJ443E mobile jaw crusher proved to be an excellent solution in our trials,’ said Tapani Rinta, chairman of the board at Maansiirto Veljekset Rinta.

The field tests of the UJ443E clearly demonstrated the benefits of the machine. The new electrified unit garnered widespread interest among industry professionals, with key aggregate operators participating in the roadshow.

‘Our industry is increasingly focused on energy-efficient solutions and promoting sustainability. The Sandvik UJ443E will help us substantially improve the sustainability of aggregate production without compromising productivity,’ concluded Pekka Jauhiainen, sales manager at Sandvik Rock Processing.

‘We would like to thank all our customers who came to see us during the roadshow tour and especially Swerock, Kamrock, and Maansiirto Veljekset Rinta for their test efforts, valuable feedback and the opportunity to showcase our unit at their worksites for the benefit of other industry players.’
