Quarry of the Year award presentation at Gill Mill

Judging panel chair Steve Cole presents Gill Mill Quarry manager Ben Strickland with the shield 

SMITHS (Bletchington) Ltd’s Gill Mill Quarry was presented with the Quarry of the Year award yesterday [5 May] by Steve Cole, chair of the British Aggregates Association (BAA) panel that judges operating standards performance at members' sites.

Mr Cole presented the shield to the quarry manager Ben Strickland and complimented the quarry personnel on their excellent performance. Also in attendance at the presentation were a number of the company’s management team representing operations, HR and health and safety.

The scheme, which independently audits quarry operating procedures at members’ sites, was set up in 2007 by the late Bob Durward, former chair of the BAA, who aimed to raise the standard of operations and health and safety at SME member sites. To date, more than 40% of BAA members have participated in the scheme.
