Planning secured for concrete plant at Rhugh Garbh Depot
Aggregate Industries to construct new concrete batching plant at Glensanda Quarry service depot
AGGREGATE Industries UK have secured planning permission for the construction of a concrete batching plant at their Rhugh Garbh Depot in Barcaldine, near Oban, Argyll and Bute.
The depot serves as a support facility for the company’s Glensanda coastal super quarry. Operational services performed by the depot include access for all plant, machinery, and personnel to the quarry by service boats. The proposed mobile concrete batching plant will occupy less than 0.5ha within the existing depot.
Planning consent for the mobile concrete batching plant, which is likely to be a McCrory MCM60 model measuring approximately 16m in length, 2.6m in width, and 7.1m in height, was issued in February 2024.
Despite utilising 0.49ha of the operational site, the physical structures, including the plant, cabin, and aggregate storage bays, will cover less than 250m2. A sealed mobile horizontal cement silo will also be installed adjacent to the plant.
The sourcing of aggregates for the batching plant will be facilitated directly from Glensanda Quarry via maritime transport, eliminating the need for road transportation. Cement will be delivered by bulk powder tankers, accessing the site via the existing entrance.
The plant’s estimated annual production is projected to be around 11,500m3 concrete, translating to eight to 10 loads per day based on 6m3 loads.
The plant is expected to operate from Monday to Sunday, between 7am and 7pm. However, when circumstances dictate, work outside these hours might be necessary, particularly for contracts that demand a continuous flow of concrete, such as bridge construction projects.
