Steve Mellor Steve Mellor

IQ saddened to report passing of author of first edition of Crushing and Screening Handbook

IT is with great sadness that we have to report the death of Steve Mellor who died in hospital in Valencia on 5 December after a short illness. Having joined the industry as trainee service manager with Frederick Parker Ltd in 1977, he went on to work for Nordberg and ACP Asphalt Plants, before moving overseas to take up a post in Mauritius in the early 1990s. He then went to Singapore from where he acted as an agent for US-based Trio Crushing Equipment, which is now part of the Weir Engineering Group. After many years of selling plant and equipment in the Far East he moved to Australia, before eventually retiring to Spain.

In his professional capacity he joined the Institute of Quarrying as an Associate in 1969 and was elected as a Fellow in 1994. And, before moving overseas, he authored the first edition of the very well-regarded Crushing and Screening Handbook in 1990. This book was originally produced by the Institute to help support students on the quarrying course at Doncaster College and, in an updated form, it remains in print to this day. Steve was a big man with a big personality who was well known in quarrying circles and he will be sorely missed by his wife Lola and the rest of the family, as well as his many friends around the world.
