New Volvo FMX eight-wheelers for EWD Recycling

EWD Volvo FMXs

Essex-based waste-management operator strengthens haulage fleet with four new 8x4 rigids

COLCHESTER-based EWD Recycling have taken delivery of four new Volvo FMX 8x4 rigids from local dealers Volvo Truck and Bus Centre East Anglia, on the strength of their reputation for providing exceptional after-sales support and trucks that offer maximum uptime.

EWD Recycling provide waste disposal and waste-recycling services in the east of England, and already operate a predominantly Volvo-branded fleet of 30 HGVs. The latest Volvo truck order includes: two FMXs with Boweld steel tipping bodies; and a second pair with Hyva hookloader bodywork and drawbar couplings.

All four FMX eight-wheelers are powered by Volvo’s D11K Euro 6 diesel engine that produces 430hp and delivers a peak torque of 2,050Nm between 1,000 and 1,400 rev/min. The rigids also feature Volvo’s 12-speed I-Shift automated gearbox, which is said to set the standard for gearbox efficiency in the haulage sector.

The I-Shift transmission is designed to perform every shift with precision as it is programmed to evaluate key information such as speed, weight, road grade and torque demand. This allows the engine to adjust the revs and braking for maximum performance.

The automated gearbox’s smoothness also places less stress on the driveline and tyres, reducing wear and tear. For driver comfort, the FMX trucks have been fitted with a programmable night heater, providing a pre-warmed cab on cold days before early morning shifts begin.

Danny Cook, manager of EWD Recycling, commented: ‘Our drivers absolutely love the Volvos. We need vehicles that can cope being worked hard in this kind of environment and we get very good uptime from our FMXs.’

All four FMX 8x4 trucks have been supplied with a three-year Volvo Silver contract, which covers all preventative maintenance and driveline repairs carried out by qualified Volvo engineers at Volvo Truck and Bus Centre East Anglia’s Ipswich site.
