New Volvo ADTs for Scottish quarry operator
Patersons purchase three A40G articulated haulers to help increase productivity at Burrowine Moor Quarry
PATERSONS Quarries Ltd have invested in a trio of new Volvo A40G articulated haulers to cope with an increase in production at the quarry operator’s Burrowine Moor site, near Bogside, in Fife.
Commenting on the new Volvo machines, managing director Tom Paterson said: ‘Over the years we’ve had a good experience operating Volvo articulated haulers in our quarrying and landfill operations, and their pedigree is sound in terms of reliability and performance with good residuals when it’s time to trade.’
Replacing the company’s five-year-old A35F haulers and an A30E unit, the A40G units are being used to haul silica sand to the processing plant, but can also be called upon to shift overburden and rock.
Meeting the requirements of Tier IV Final emissions legislation, the A40G is powered by a 16-litre Volvo engine (347kW) which delivers high torque at low engine speeds, resulting in good fuel efficiency, high performance, quicker engine response and reduced wear/longer service life.
The whole powertrain if designed to make best use of the available power and torque, even in tough working conditions. The engine in the drivetrain is matched to a torque converter with built in lock-up function and fitted with a fully automatic fast adaptive transmission.
The A40G hauler features Volvo’s Automatic Traction Control (ATC) system, which has been designed primarily to provide optimum traction in all road conditions. The system automatically disengages the rear axle when all-wheel drive is not required, thereby eliminating wheel skid when cornering and reducing wear on tyres.
With a carrying capacity of 39 tonnes and a heaped capacity of 24 cubic metres, the A40G has a maximum speed of 57km/h. All three haulers have been supplied with Volvo’s Silver customer support agreement, which provides Patersons Quarries with a tool to budget for and track the running costs of each truck.
