Volvo Penta have launched their most powerful engine to date for off-road and stationary applications – the new TAD1650VE. Producing 400kW at 1,800 rev/min, the compact-size engine is a direct-injected, four-stroke, turbocharged, charge-air-cooled diesel equipped with mechanically actuated, electronic-controlled unit injectors.
The 16-litre TAD1650VE offers a flat torque curve of 2,500Nm between 950 rev/min and 1,500 rev/min, delivering, say Volvo, higher torque, greater fuel economy, better reliability and maximum durability.
Incorporating Volvo Advance Combustion Technology (V-ACT), the diesel engine meets Tier 3 and Stage III emissions levels, thanks to major improvements in air and fuel-management, which give extremely fast response to throttle opening but with low transient smoke.
One of the key features of V-ACT is internal exhaust gas recirculation, which returns a controlled amount of exhaust gases to the combustion process, thereby lowering peak combustion temperature and reducing the formation of nitrogen oxide (NOx).
In addition to complying with Tier 3/Stage III standards, the TAD1650VE has been designed to meet other specifications and uses all commercially available fuel qualities.
