New partnership brings ultra-low carbon cement to marine infrastructure
Material Evolution and ARC Marine join forces to scale sustainable marine solutions
ARC Marine, a leader in nature-inclusive designs for marine environments, and Material Evolution, an ultra-low carbon cement pioneer, have announced a new partnership to integrate the latter’s green cement into some of ARC Marine’s products.
The companies have formalized a partnership with the shared goal of developing and deploying Material Evolution’s MevoCem across ARC Marine’s portfolio of aquaculture, coastal defence and offshore energy products. As part of the alliance, ARC Marine have accepted delivery of the first shipment of product to undergo stringent testing in the harsh marine environment. Material Evolution say their MevoCem product is well-suited to harsh marine environments due to its enhanced durability compared to Portland Cement-based concretes.
Through the partnership, the organizations will develop and test bespoke products tailored for subtidal and intertidal construction to scale up production, which will also see wide-scale collaboration throughout the year and beyond.
‘This partnership represents a significant step toward our vision of creating sustainable marine infrastructure,’ said Tom Birbeck, chief executive officer of ARC Marine. ‘We are thrilled to work alongside Material Evolution to combine our expertise and drive meaningful environmental progress, and we look forward to the improved performance their MevoCem product can provide.’
Dr Elizabeth Gilligan, chief executive officer of Material Evolution, said: ‘By joining forces with ARC Marine, we are advancing the use of innovative, sustainable materials in critical marine construction applications. Together, we aim to show the power of collaborative innovation and set a new standard for environmental responsibility.’
Cement is responsible for 8% of total global emissions, and Material Evolution’s ultra-low carbon cement is said to save up to 85% carbon emissions compared to Ordinary Portland Cement. The company recently launched its first-of-a-kind ultra-low carbon cement production facility in Wrexham, Wales, with a capacity of 120,000 tonnes per year.
The agreement between ARC Marine and Material Evolution reflects a shared commitment to sustainability and innovation.
