Jet Plant Hire complete high-volume works on M4 motorway
Project involved planing and transporting 21,000 tonnes of materials for recycling
JET Plant Hire have successfully completed a programme of high-volume night-time road planing works on the M4 motorway, working alongside long-term partner Associated Asphalt. The project was delivered on time and to programme, minimizing disruption to road-users while providing a significantly improved road surface.
The works were carried out in two phases, with operations restricted to night-time hours (22:00–05:00). Associated Asphalt resurfaced 12km of the eastbound carriageway, with Jet operating within a 3h planing window to allow time for surfacing, line marking and traffic management removal ahead of the morning deadline.
The scope covered all four lanes, including the hard shoulder, with planing depths of up to 100mm. To maximize productivity, dual planing and surfacing gangs were deployed, effectively doubling nightly output. In total, around 21,000 tonnes of material were planed and transported for recycling or reuse.
Following the success of the eastbound works, Jet Plant Hire were appointed to complete the westbound carriageway, which has now been successfully finished.
Richard Bowling, area manager for Associated Asphalt, said: ‘Jet were fantastic partners throughout the M4 project. They approached every challenge with a positive, can-do attitude and never once complained about the large tonnages we needed for removal within a very restricted working window.
‘Their honesty, collaboration, and commitment helped us achieve excellent outputs. The quality and reliability of their equipment were outstanding, and I’d have no hesitation in working with them again on important projects in the future like this one.’
Richard Lovell, contracts manager at Jet Plant Hire, added: ‘This has been a key project for Jet over the last couple of months. We partnered with Associated Asphalt, assisting their team in successfully delivering the high-demand project as planned.
‘Our planing services, support equipment, and close coordination were vital in maintaining momentum throughout the project. We’re delighted to have completed the project and ensured a vital motorway continues to operate.’
