New high-powered belts

PIX Europe have launched a new high-powered belt, produced in both wrapped and cogged sections.

PIX engineers recognized that in some critical applications, when high levels of torque are applied, belts have a tendency to deflect in the pulley groove. Designed to ensure lateral rigidity, the new high-powered belt is said to guarantee minimum deformation of cross section, when in contact with pulley groove.

Its special construction with a high-modulus, low-stretch, tensile member ensures belt stability and higher power transmission capacity - 25-30% higher than a corresponding standard version. There is also less slippage with the new belts. More torque with less slippage reduces energy consumption, and can also extend the life of the belt.

PIX have been at the forefront of research and development into reducing energy consumption in belt drives. Their recent study into energy saving by switching from wrapped to raw edge cogged belts has become an industry standard reference source, and has resulted in a complete change of thinking by many specifying engineers.

A bonus feature for drive designers is that with the new high-power belts, the number of belts in a matched set of multiple-belt-drives can be reduced, and the belt life is also significantly extended. The special tension member minimizes the belt stretch, improving the machine-up time.

Whilst recognizing that their regular range of wrapped and raw edge cogged belts are more than adequate for the vast majority of applications, there is an growing demand for belts to work in extreme conditions. Crushers and recycling plants would be typical applications, where many drives are subject to harsh environments, coupled with high torque levels and shock loads.
