Komatsu versatility for Celtic Energy
The demands of a 45ha excavation area has led Walters Plant Hire to select a Komatsu PC1250 excavator for a site operated by Celtic Energy.
Established in 1982, Walters Plant Group currently have a fleet of over 250 items of plant and offer a range of services in mining, property development, civil engineering, demolition and plant hire. In July 2004, as part of their expansion plan, Richard Walters acquired Celtic Energy, who produce in excess of 2 million tonnes of coal a year.
Walters Plant Hire purchased the PC1250 excavator to dig overburden associated with the steeply dipping coal seams at Margam OCCS near Bridgend. The site moves approximately 90,000m3 of overburden every week to produce 9,000 tonnes of coal for onward distribution to industrial markets throughout the UK and for blending with coal from other Celtic Energy sites to supply Aberthaw Power Station near Cardiff.
The PC1250 replaces a Komatsu PC3000 that had previously worked at the site. A change in site geology had led to the PC3000 operating in less than optimum conditions. The PC1250 was selected for its size, offering flexibility in the geologically complex sites typically found in South Wales.
