ICT elects new President
Professor Michael Grantham becomes ninth President of the Institute of Concrete Technology
CONCRETE testing and repairs specialist Prof. Michael Grantham has been elected as only the ninth President of the Institute of Concrete Technology (ICT) in more than 40 years and took up office at the Institute’s AGM on 26 March 2015.
Accepting the chain of office, he set out his vision for the future of the ICT, with an emphasis on increasing the international scope of the Institute and the wider recognition of its qualifications.
He follows on from Prof. Peter Hewlett who stood down after seven years of distinguished service in the role but will continue to sit on Council and serve the Institute.
Prof. Grantham started his career in adhesives and plastics research but after an early change of tack has been involved in non-destructive testing and the diagnosis of defects in concrete structures since the 1970s.
He has worked for, and in some cases helped to found, several of the better known materials testing organizations. He is also co-author of ‘Testing of Concrete in Structures’ with Bungey and Millard and is currently working on a fifth edition.
In recent years, Prof. Grantham has focused on concrete repair and is chair and organizer of the successful Concrete Solutions series of international conferences on concrete repair. He is also editor of the book ‘Concrete Repair – a Practical Guide’, published by Spon, a consultant to Sandberg LLP, and runs his own venture – Concrete Solutions.
Also confirmed in new roles were Raman Mangabhai as Vice-President, Steve Walton as Hon. Secretary and Norman Greig as Hon. Treasurer, along with several new members of Council.
