Hanson replace old Hazemag with new
When a 35-year-old Hazemag impactor finally came to the end of its working life at Hanson Aggregates’ Chipping Sodbury Quarry, in Gloucestershire, the company opted to replace it with one of today’s new generation of Hazemag machines.
The old Hazemag AP5 Broad primary crusher had reliably processed in excess of 40 million tonnes of limestone since its installation in the early 1970s, operating at rates of around 500 tonnes/h.
Hanson were well aware that replacing the old crusher with a new Hazemag primary impactor would provide increased throughput capacity and improved crushing efficiency, however, it was simplicity of installation that was recognized by the company as the major advantage of selecting Hazemag once again.
The new Hazemag AP-PH 1622 is a direct replacement for the AP5 Broad and has been designed to occupy the same envelope as the old machine. This meant that the new crusher could be installed with minimal time and effort.
Quarry manager Colin White said: ‘Installation of the new impactor was undertaken without any major structural alterations. With the new machine having the same footprint as the old machine, engineers were able to remove the old crusher and install the new one on to the same mounting bolts. This allowed them to complete the installation quickly, keeping costly downtime to a minimum.’ Hanson are said to be particularly impressed with the new machine’s hydraulic apron-locking facility, which includes overload protection. The hydraulics hold the aprons in position, providing a consistent product size with less oversize than conventional manual/spring-loaded impact aprons. The hydraulics are also fitted with automatic relief valves to protect internal components from damage by tramp metal.
The AP-PH 1622 has also been designed to open and adjust with the use of a hand-held remote-control unit, while additional features include: a hydraulically tilting feed plate to improve blockage clearance; a heavy-duty cast-steel disc GSK rotor; and a captive-key safety system.
