Quality equipment and strengthening Euro help achieve high hammer prices at heavy plant auction in Leeds

EURO Auctions say they saw higher turnouts, brisk trading and strong prices achieved at their three-day October auction in Leeds, where 3,559 lots realized a total hammer price of more than £28 million.

According to the specialist auctioneers, some of the highest-quality used equipment to be consigned to an auction to date, together with a strong Euro and a record-breaking 1,800+ registered bidders – 7% of whom were first-time buyers, many from overseas – resulted in a bumper sale.

A high proportion of the lots sold went to mainland Europe and North America, with almost 5% of all purchases destined for the Middle East.

‘While the total number of lots was down slightly for this auction, the quality of the equipment consigned was probably among the best we’ve ever seen,’ said Jonnie Keys, general manager of Euro Auctions. ‘This, combined with a stronger Euro, increased interest from mainland Europe and internationally that resulted in some really competitive on-site and Internet bidding.

‘And although we just fell short of the record-breaking ‘biggest ever’ overall hammer total achieved in August, average prices achieved per lot were more than 16.5% higher.’

Mr Keys added: ‘We recorded an excellent turnout across all three days. Demand for used construction equipment is exceptionally high at the moment, and good-quality, well-presented plant will always command a premium.’

The standout lot of the October Leeds auction was a 2012 Cat 825H compactor, which caught the eye of a number of international online bidders and those present at the event, and ultimately achieved £235,000.

Euro Auctions’ 26-acre Leeds auction site was expanded earlier this year with the acquisition of an adjacent 80-acre plot of land.

Other upcoming Euro Auctions sales in 2016 include: Dromore, Ireland (4–5 November); Zaragoza, Spain (22 November); and Leeds (23–25 November). The first sales in 2017 include: Leeds (25–27 January); Dormagen, Germany (8–9 February); and Brisbane, Australia (23 February).
