Cemex's Mark Grimshaw-Smith appointed to board of Logistics UK
Cemex supply chain team rail and sea manager appointed as one of four new non-executive directors
CEMEX are pleased to announce that Mark Grimshaw-Smith, rail and sea manager in the company’s supply chain team, has been appointed as one of four new non-executive directors to the board of Logistics UK.
Logistics UK is one of the country’s largest business groups, representing the entire logistics sector, including road, rail, sea, and air. Its core purpose is to support, shape, and stand up for safe, sustainable, and efficient logistics, ensuring that the industry remains a vital part of the UK economy.
The recent Logistics UK Board appointments of Mark Grimshaw-Smith, Jamie Hartles, Professor Rem Noormohamed, and James Wroath, bring a collective expertise that will help strengthen the strategic development of Logistics UK’s multimodal offering.
‘Our new non-executive directors join Logistics UK at a key time for our sector, and bring a wide range of knowledge to help us drive the organization on to the next stage of its development,’ said Logistics UK president Phil Roe.
‘With roles covering all modes of transport, as well as business change and digital transformation, they will complement the skills already in place on the board to ensure we are best placed to serve the needs of our members, and the industry as a whole, as it grows and develops. I am looking forward to the challenges and insight that they will bring to our thinking.’
Mark, in particular, brings more than 40 years’ experience in construction materials supply chain and logistics, covering all modes of transport. Throughout his career at Cemex, he has championed the modal shift to rail, sea, and inland waterways to create greater efficiencies, customer satisfaction, and more sustainable methods of transport in support of Cemex’s wider sustainability objectives; the company aims to become a carbon net-zero business by 2050 as part of its global Future in Action programme.
Mr Grimshaw-Smith said: ‘I’m delighted to take up this position and to be able to use the valuable experiences I have gained from working across different modes of transport to help the UK’s logistics sector continue to grow and develop. The logistics sector in the UK plays a vital role in helping to facilitate economic growth through the movement of vital materials and provision of essential services.’
Mr Grimshaw-Smith is deeply passionate about safety in the freight environment, particularly the interface at wharfs and railheads, and the distinctive safety requirements that present themselves within the rail and waterway environments. He has recently been instrumental in developing Cemex's global rail safety standards, representing Cemex’s EMEA region, and continues to support the continued growth in the company’s rail transportation activities.
He has also been heavily involved in working alongside Rail Safe Friendly to improve rail safety awareness in schools and communities across the UK, ensuring that young people understand the importance of safety around railway operations.
As part of his appointment to the Logistics UK Board, Mr Grimshaw-Smith says he wants to continue to advance the UK’s logistics, supply chain and freight services as world leading in the areas of safety, sustainability, innovation, and customer experience.
